Eclipse Papyrus review
A deep modeling environment for advanced UML and SysML work, not simple diagramming.

Eclipse Papyrus is an open-source modeling environment for UML and related systems-modeling standards. It is designed for industrial model-based engineering, academic teaching, and research teams that need more than basic diagram creation. The product supports UML 2.5 graphical diagram editors and SysML 1.6 graphical and tabular editors, with diagram types including class, component, deployment, activity, state machine, sequence, block definition, requirement, and parametric diagrams. Papyrus-Desktop runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, while Papyrus-Web provides browser-based modeling and real-time simultaneous collaboration.
Its strongest distinction is modeling depth. Through Moka, teams can execute, animate, and simulate models. Custom UML profiles and domain-specific modeling languages support specialized methods, while custom graphical, textual, and tabular notations extend how models are represented. Custom palettes, properties views, and model explorers add further control over the modeling experience. Sirius-Desktop supplies a diagram layer, and EEF supplies property views, giving Papyrus a close fit with the Eclipse tools and plugins ecosystem.
The open-source pricing model makes Papyrus available without a paid tier, which suits organizations and educators seeking an extensible modeling environment rather than a packaged commercial diagramming service. Papyrus-Web adds collaboration in the browser, while the desktop edition supports local work across the listed operating systems. The trade-off is focus: Papyrus is specialized for structured UML and systems modeling, so teams wanting quick, lightweight visual diagrams may find its breadth unnecessary. Papyrus-Desktop is the current desktop edition; Papyrus-Classic is no longer actively maintained. Choose Papyrus for advanced, customizable UML or SysML work, and consider a simpler diagramming product for casual visual documentation.
