EC-CUBE review
A flexible self-hosted choice for Japanese operators comfortable managing their own store.

EC-CUBE is an open-source ecommerce platform for building and operating online stores on a customer-managed server. It suits Japanese store operators who want control over source-code customization, store structure, product data, orders, shipments, and customer accounts. The GPL license permits free download, use, and source-code modification. A separate commercial license is available for use cases that do not comply with the GPL, with options covering one site, three licenses, four to nine licenses, and ten or more licenses.
Its core ecommerce coverage is broad for a self-hosted system. Store operators can manage shopping carts and checkout, customer logins, order history, addresses, favorites, product variants, images, inventory quantities, delivery status, invoices, pages, layouts, templates, and SEO. CSV import and export supports product, category, order, shipment, and customer data. Administrator two-factor authentication adds an account-security control, while downloadable products are supported through an official marketplace plugin rather than a clearly stated built-in current 4.x feature. The Owners Store provides access to plugins and extensions, including payment, logistics, inventory, advertising, and external-system connections.
The main trade-off is operational responsibility: EC-CUBE is web-based but self-hosted, so it fits teams that can manage their own server and customize an open-source storefront. Its extension model can broaden the platform, but buyers seeking a hosted service with a large, ready-made integration ecosystem should consider a different type of ecommerce platform. Choose EC-CUBE when source access, Japanese-market focus, and control over store implementation matter most; avoid it when minimizing infrastructure ownership and technical setup is the priority.
