EaglePress review
A capable free CMS for bloggers who want marketplace-driven self-hosting.

EaglePress is a self-hosted, open-source content management system and blogging platform for individuals and small publishing teams. It runs on Apache or Nginx with CGI support, uses Python 3 and PostgreSQL, and covers core publishing needs through posts, pages, drafts, previews, published states, Markdown editing, themes, plugins, media, comments, and user roles. It is a strong fit for bloggers who want control over deployment and access to browsable marketplaces rather than a hosted service with a fixed environment.
EaglePress is free and distributed as a downloadable archive. Its browser-based installation can guide deployment, while one-click updates include checksum verification and database migrations. That update path adds useful operational safeguards for a self-hosted CMS, but the required web server, CGI support, Python 3, and PostgreSQL still make setup more involved than a hosted blogging platform. Teams should also account for custom code when editing themes.
The publishing toolkit is broad for a blogging-focused CMS. Authors get a Markdown editor with live preview and syntax highlighting, hierarchical categories, tags, featured images, custom slugs, threaded comments with moderation controls, and five roles: admin, editor, author, contributor, and subscriber. Theme previews, activation, and plugin installation are handled from marketplaces, which suits publishers who want to extend a self-hosted site without building every feature from scratch. Choose EaglePress if marketplace access, open-source control, and self-hosting matter most; choose a hosted alternative if minimal infrastructure work or no-code theme customization is the priority.
