Dryad is a research data repository and publishing service for researchers, institutions, funders, and scholarly publishers. Authors submit datasets with descriptive metadata and README documentation; curators review data and documentation for accessibility, completeness, and reusability before publication. Published datasets are openly searchable and receive citable DOIs. Its focus is research data that can be shared openly, making it a fit for authors who want a curated, citable publication rather than a private repository for sensitive material.
For individual authors, the published charges are one-time per dataset: $150 for up to 5 GB and $180 for up to 10 GB. These are data publishing charges for an individual dataset submission. Institutional partners have separate annual service fees and usage-based charges, so the individual prices should not be treated as institutional pricing. Authors comparing repositories should weigh the curation and publication process against paying per dataset; Dryad is less suited to those prioritizing a free option.
The publication workflow includes metadata and documentation, automatic checks for selected tabular, JSON, and XML files, and a private sharing link for peer review before public release. Once published, a dataset can be discovered through search and browse tools, and earlier versions are retained when it is updated. Dryad also supports journal submission workflows and offers API-based submission for partner organizations, alongside integrations with Zenodo and CEDAR. Choose it when human review, persistent citation, and open discovery matter; choose another repository if the dataset requires restricted access after publication.
