docTR review
A developer-focused OCR library with strong layout, table, and extraction tools.

docTR is an open-source Python library for optical character recognition and document understanding. It is designed for developers, researchers, and teams building applications that process image files and PDFs. The toolkit runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and combines text detection and recognition with document-level analysis. Its scope suits technical users who need OCR capabilities inside a software project rather than a standalone hosted subscription product.
Its strongest area is structured document analysis. docTR includes predictors for text detection, recognition, layout analysis, table structure recognition, and key information extraction. Layout analysis can identify regions such as tables, figures, headers, and footers, while table recognition can return cell and logical-coordinate output. The key information extraction predictor supports multiple detection classes. These capabilities give developers more control over document structure than a narrow text-only OCR workflow, particularly when downstream processing depends on regions, reading order, or extracted fields.
The library also supports PDF and image document loading, reading-order-aware text rendering, and export to Markdown, AsciiDoc, HTML, plain text, JSON, and hOCR XML. Model training and custom dataset support allow teams to adapt the system within their own applications. Its cross-platform, open-source model is a good fit for developers who want to integrate OCR and document analysis into Python-based software. Teams seeking a hosted OCR subscription product or searchable-PDF output should choose a different tool. docTR is most appropriate when implementation control, custom training, and structured outputs matter more than a packaged end-user workflow.
docTR pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Detects and recognizes text with two-stage OCR predictors
- Analyzes tables, figures, headers, footers, and reading order
- Exports to Markdown, HTML, JSON, plain text, and hOCR XML
- Where it doesn't
- Developer library rather than a hosted OCR subscription product
- Listed export formats do not include searchable PDF
- Requires development work for custom training and application integration
