Dendri is a TypeScript SDK and signaling server for adding peer-to-peer realtime features to web applications. It is aimed at developers building collaborative products that need room-based peer discovery, synchronized presence, chat messaging, RPC, WebRTC audio and video calls, binary file transfer, and Yjs document synchronization. Browser and Node.js usage are documented, with official integrations for React, Vue, and Svelte. Dendri can run through Afterrealism’s managed signaling and TURN service or as an open-source, self-hosted server.

Its strongest fit is a product that benefits from direct peer connections and collaborative state. The feature set combines topic-based pub/sub, typed presence, host migration, automatic reconnection, transport fallback, and WebRTC data channels with TURN relay and encrypted TLS relay delivery. Yjs support adds a clear path for collaborative documents, while RPC supports request/response interactions between peers. The Community plan costs $0 and includes a self-hosted server, unlimited peers and rooms, bring-your-own TURN, and Docker or Podman deployment. Starter costs $29 per month and adds managed signaling and TURN, 500 concurrent connections, 50 GB of TURN bandwidth, 50 rooms, 3 API keys, email support, and a 99.5% SLA.

The main trade-off is focus. Dendri supplies realtime transport and collaboration primitives rather than a complete chat product. Push notifications, message-history retention, moderation tools, and a dedicated typing-indicator API are not part of the documented feature set, so teams needing those capabilities will need to build around Dendri or choose another service. Enterprise adds dedicated capacity, higher TURN throughput, custom SLA, and priority support, while the commercial license covers closed-source server modifications and direct maintainer support. Choose Dendri for peer-to-peer collaborative applications and self-hosting flexibility; look elsewhere if managed messaging operations and built-in moderation are central requirements.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Push notifications are not part of the documented feature set
    • No documented moderation tools or dedicated typing-indicator API
