Cubasis is Steinberg’s mobile digital audio workstation for musicians and producers working on iPhone, iPad, Android smartphones and tablets, or Chromebooks. It combines audio recording and editing with MIDI sequencing, virtual instruments, keyboard and drum pads, a mixer, channel effects, automation, time-stretching and pitch-shifting. Its unlimited audio and MIDI tracks make it suited to users who want a full music-production workflow on mobile devices rather than a simple recorder or editor.

Its strongest advantage is ecosystem flexibility. Cubasis supports Audio Unit, Inter-App Audio and Audiobus 3, along with Ableton Link synchronization and MIDI Learn, Mackie Control and HUI hardware control. Projects can be exported to Cubase, while cloud-storage connections include Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud Drive and AudioCopy. That combination gives musicians several routes for moving projects, connecting compatible tools and continuing work across Steinberg’s desktop ecosystem and cloud services.

Cubasis is a focused choice for mobile music creation, with enough sequencing, mixing and instrument features to support detailed arrangements. The product is paid rather than free, and its plans are organized separately for iOS and Android. Users who want recording, MIDI editing, mixing and music-production tools on supported mobile hardware should find the feature scope well aligned with that goal. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a desktop-first workstation or a broader media editor beyond audio and MIDI production.

Cubasis pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Unlimited audio and MIDI tracks for multitrack projects
    • Time-stretching, pitch-shifting, instruments, effects and automation
    • Exports projects to Cubase and several cloud-storage services
  • Where it doesn't
    • Paid product with no free plan
    • Separate iOS and Android plans reflect a mobile-first workflow
    • Project tools focus on music production rather than broader media editing
