Crossref Metadata Search is a free, browser-based way to find metadata for journal articles, books, standards, datasets, and other scholarly works. It suits researchers, students, librarians, and others who need to identify or look up a work by title, author, DOI, ORCID iD, ISSN, or full citation. Query-term search can also help locate articles when a precise identifier is not at hand. The interface draws on records available through Crossref’s REST API, and its metadata is openly available for use.
Its strongest fit is precise record lookup across several common identifiers. A DOI or full citation can lead to a specific work, while an ISSN narrows a search to articles within a journal and an ORCID iD helps find associated works. After signing in with ORCID, users can add search results to their ORCID record. That makes the tool useful in workflows focused on finding and collecting publication records, rather than exploring relationships among papers. The search is available on the web, with documentation as the listed support channel.
The scope is narrower than broad scholarly discovery tools: it does not provide citation graphs, semantic search, related-paper recommendations, literature mapping, or natural-language search. Its free access is a practical advantage for straightforward metadata queries, but API access is a separate Metadata Plus offering rather than part of this browser search. Choose Crossref Metadata Search when identifiers and citation details are the route into a work; look elsewhere if your main need is recommendation-led discovery or mapping a research field.
