CrafterCMS is an open-source, Git-based headless and hybrid-headless CMS for enterprise websites, portals, intranets, mobile applications, and other content-driven experiences. It suits teams that want open-source DevContentOps workflows alongside web-based authoring, WYSIWYG and in-context editing, REST and GraphQL APIs, multilingual management, and multiple deployment models. The platform supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, API, and self-hosted environments.

The free Crafter Community edition provides the core open-source platform with community support. Crafter Enterprise adds a commercially supported self-managed option, while Crafter Cloud provides a fully managed commercially supported edition. Across the platform, teams can use GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket, plus AWS S3 and AWS MediaConvert. Deployment webhooks and notifications connect publishing activity with surrounding delivery workflows.

CrafterCMS is strongest when content operations span multiple sites, channels, languages, and publishing teams. Multi-channel previews, workflow approvals, scheduled publishing, granular role and object-level permissions, automatic image resizing and format processing, and plugin-based server-side extensibility give larger organizations control over both governance and delivery. Teams that want to run the platform themselves can use its self-hosted model, while those seeking managed delivery have the Cloud option. A smaller team with one straightforward site may find this breadth unnecessary and may prefer a more narrowly focused CMS.

CrafterCMS pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Free Community edition with Git-based DevContentOps workflows
    • REST and GraphQL APIs support multiple digital channels
    • Multisite, multilingual management with approvals and granular permissions
  • Where it doesn't
    • Paid Enterprise and Cloud editions add commercial commitments
    • Self-hosting requires responsibility for deployment and operations
    • Its broad scope may exceed the needs of a single-site team
