COMSOL Multiphysics review
A broad desktop environment for coupled physics, engineering models, and custom simulation apps.

COMSOL Multiphysics is an integrated desktop environment for creating, solving, visualizing, and evaluating physics-based models. It is designed for engineers, researchers, manufacturers, technical enterprises, laboratories, and universities working across structural mechanics, acoustics, fluid flow, heat transfer, chemical engineering, electromagnetics, and other engineering disciplines. Users can build coupled multiphysics or single-physics models, create geometry, mesh designs, and work with predefined physics interfaces. The software supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and API access, with offline access and three-dimensional visuals included in its product capabilities.
Its main strength is breadth across the modeling workflow. COMSOL supports stationary, time-dependent, frequency-domain, and eigenfrequency studies, along with parametric sweeps and optimization workflows. Geometry and CAD interoperability support work with AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, Solid Edge, SOLIDWORKS, and CATIA V5. Integrations with MATLAB, Simulink, and Excel extend its fit for engineering analysis and existing technical workflows. Results and simulation data can be exported to multiple formats, while Application Builder supports custom simulation applications and Model Manager helps organize models and apps.
According to the vendor's licensing information, prospective customers are directed to sales, and the pricing model is contact sales. There is no free plan. The main product is desktop software; browser access applies to deployed applications through COMSOL Server rather than the core desktop environment. That makes COMSOL Multiphysics a strong choice for organizations that need broad physics coverage, CAD interoperability, optimization, custom applications, and structured model management. Teams seeking a browser-first tool, a free entry tier, or a narrower and potentially simpler simulation workflow should look elsewhere.
COMSOL Multiphysics pros and cons
