Cohere API provides hosted access to models for text generation, chat, retrieval-augmented generation, citations, tool use, agents, embeddings, reranking, document parsing and audio transcription. It targets mid-market and enterprise teams building search, knowledge and automation products, with APIs available through Cohere-managed infrastructure and options for isolated or on-premises inference. SDKs cover Python, TypeScript, Java and Go, while multimodal inputs, transcription and a 256,000-token maximum context window broaden its application range.

The published plans separate evaluation from production use. A Trial API key provides free calls for evaluation and proof-of-concept work, but it is rate-limited and not permitted for production or commercial use. Production API access is pay-as-you-go, with billing based on tokens, searches or embeddings depending on the endpoint. Dedicated Model Vault Embed 5 Fast (Small) inference is priced at $3 per instance per hour when billed monthly, or $2,000 per instance per month for the monthly option. These managed instances add dedicated inference and a small performance tier; standard hosted production usage remains usage-based.

Cohere fits teams that need a wide retrieval and model-toolkit ecosystem: integrations include Amazon Bedrock, Amazon SageMaker, Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, Oracle OCI, LangChain, LlamaIndex, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Redis, Pinecone, Weaviate and OpenSearch. Security and deployment requirements are addressed through SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR coverage, plus cloud and self-hosted deployment. The breadth is useful for enterprise RAG and search architectures, but teams seeking image generation or a simple fixed-cost API should look elsewhere. Choose Cohere when retrieval depth, reranking, parsing and deployment control matter together.
