CesiumJS is an open-source JavaScript library for building interactive 3D globes and maps in web applications. It is aimed at developers who need to visualize or analyze geospatial data in a browser, including 3D Tiles, models, terrain, imagery, and vector formats. It can also show time-dynamic simulations and real-time telemetry, with visualizations shareable with desktop and mobile users. This is a developer tool rather than a ready-made visualization application, so it suits teams able to build around a web library.

Its feature set is centered on geospatial scenes: developers can stream, style, and interact with 3D Tiles such as buildings, photogrammetry, and point clouds; display glTF models; and load KML, GeoJSON, or CZML data. Geometry can also be drawn through the API. Switching among 3D, 2D, and 2.5D map views gives an application options for presenting the same geographic context. That breadth within mapping makes CesiumJS a fit for projects combining multiple spatial data types, rather than a general 3D design or rendering workflow.

CesiumJS itself is free for commercial and non-commercial use under the Apache 2.0 license. Cesium ion is a separate service that can provide hosted content and additional services, with its own plans; those services should be evaluated separately from the open-source library. Choose CesiumJS when the requirement is a browser-based geospatial experience and the team can implement it in JavaScript. A buyer seeking a standalone visualization product, or a tool focused beyond geospatial data, should consider an alternative.

CesiumJS pros and cons

    • Supports time-dynamic visualization and 3D, 2D, and 2.5D views
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires JavaScript development to build web visualizations
    • Its focus is geospatial 3D rather than general-purpose visualization
    • Hosted content and additional Cesium ion services are separate offerings
