Catalyst review
A private, queue-focused downloader for bulk desktop video workflows.

Catalyst is an open-source desktop video downloader built around a graphical interface for yt-dlp. It is aimed at users who want to collect videos from more than 1,800 supported sites, including YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, Twitch and Bilibili, while keeping downloads on their own computer. Bulk URL import, queue management, format selection and named output categories make it suited to privacy-focused users handling multiple downloads rather than occasional single-link saves.
The Free plan includes the complete published feature set: open-source code, no account requirement and local processing. Catalyst supports configurable queues, queue reordering and concurrent downloads, with output choices including MP4, Best Quality using AV1/VP9, MP3 and M4A. Users can select containers, codecs and resolutions, with maximum quality listed as 4K. Download history adds search and one-click redownload, while separate directories help organize named output categories. Browser cookie import from Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Brave can support downloads that require an authenticated browser session.
Its privacy model is a central reason to choose it: operation is local and the product does not use analytics or telemetry or require an account. Automatic yt-dlp updates help maintain the downloader layer, and desktop notifications are included. The trade-off is maturity: the official download page identifies Catalyst as an alpha release, and the repository lists alpha releases. Buyers wanting an open-source, desktop-first bulk downloader should find the feature mix well aligned; those seeking a mature service, mobile workflow or AI-assisted features should choose another type of tool.
