Carbone is a document-generation engine for developers and business teams that need to turn JSON data into PDFs and other document outputs. It works with editable templates in DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, HTML, Markdown, PDF, and other formats. Templates can support substitutions, repetitions, conditions, calculations, images, charts, barcodes, and other document features. The product is suited to teams building automated reports, forms, invoices, business documents, and document workflows.

Its platform coverage is a major strength. Carbone offers a cloud service, REST API, SDK-based integration, and self-hosted deployment. Integrations include Zapier, Airtable, Bubble, n8n, Make, Odoo, HubSpot, and Salesforce. The feature set also covers template storage and versioning, batch generation of multiple reports from one template and dataset, PDF form and AcroForm filling, dynamic text fields and checkboxes, and HTML and CSS to PDF rendering. Document conversion spans more than 160 formats, while PDF tools include merging, appending, watermarking, and encryption.

The Free plan provides cloud access. Essential adds cloud access and API document generation, while Advanced adds expert support, the Studio web component, and SSO. Carbone is a strong fit for teams that want open-source flexibility alongside hosted, API, and self-hosted options. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a narrowly focused desktop PDF editor or teams that require Advanced-plan capabilities such as SSO, Studio, or expert support without selecting that tier.
