CamStudio is free screen-recording software for Windows users who need control over what is captured and how recordings are encoded. It can record an entire monitor, an active window, or a selected region, then save the result as an MP4 file. The product supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 and is distributed as a standalone executable. Its intended audience is therefore people who want a focused desktop recorder rather than a broader video-production or presentation platform.

CamStudio has a single free pricing model, with no paid tiers described. Its feature set centers on configurable capture: users can set resolution, framerate, bitrate, codec, maximum recording length, and maximum file size. Video output can use H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, while audio encoding supports AAC and FLAC. System-audio and application-specific audio capture are included, and keyboard shortcuts can start or stop recording. These controls give the product useful flexibility for recording different Windows capture scenarios without introducing a tiered plan structure.

The main trade-off is scope. CamStudio does not provide webcam capture, and microphone recording is temporarily disabled, so it is not a fit for narrated tutorials, face-camera demonstrations, or recordings that require live voice input. It also remains Windows-only, which limits its use across mixed-platform teams. Choose CamStudio when monitor, window, or region capture and detailed encoding controls matter most. Choose an alternative when webcam and microphone recording, broader platform support, or a wider set of production features are central requirements.
