Cakewalk Sonar is a desktop digital audio workstation for musicians, producers, songwriters, and composers working on Windows. Its free tier includes core recording, editing, mixing, MIDI, sequencing, and an indefinite free license. The feature set also covers unlimited multitrack audio recording, a multi-track Piano Roll, a built-in Step Sequencer, take lanes, comping, video support, virtual instruments, and VST3 hosting. That makes it a strong fit for solo creators and small production setups that want a full studio workflow without an upfront license fee.
The free tier provides the foundation for recording and production, while BandLab Pro adds premium Cakewalk Sonar features, premium plugins and instruments, and BandLab Sounds access. BandLab Max adds advanced music-creation tools, additional services, and priority support. The published plans also identify a three-day free trial, while the core Sonar license remains available indefinitely at no cost with a BandLab account. Activated projects can be used offline, although some services require periodic online access.
Its standout strength is breadth within a Windows-focused workflow. ProChannel mixing and mastering tools, VocalSync timing alignment, AudioSnap transient detection and quantization, and Mix Recall for alternate mix scenes support detailed editing and mixing without relying solely on third-party tools. BandLab Project Library enables cloud publishing and downloading, and the wider ecosystem includes BandLab FX, BandLab Instruments, BandLab Effect-Chains, and CXF Project Exchange. Choose Cakewalk Sonar if you work on Windows 11 or higher and want extensive recording, MIDI, mixing, and plugin support at no cost. Choose another DAW if you need macOS or another platform.
