Cakewalk Sonar review
A feature-rich free DAW for Windows, with broad recording and MIDI tools.

Cakewalk Sonar is a desktop digital audio workstation for musicians, producers, composers, sound designers, and mix engineers working on Windows. Its free tier covers multitrack audio recording, MIDI and instrument track editing, and mixing, with unlimited audio and instrument tracks. That breadth makes it a strong fit for solo creators and smaller production teams seeking substantial recording tools without starting with a paid plan.
The editing and mixing toolkit reaches beyond basic track capture. A piano roll offers multi-track editing, articulation maps, and expression editing, while the built-in step sequencer supports pattern-based work. Take lanes and comping help organize alternate performances. For mix and timing work, ProChannel provides mixing tools and effects, VocalSync aligns vocal timing, AudioSnap supports transient editing, and Mix Recall saves scenes for comparing mix settings. These tools suit users who want a single workstation for arranging, recording, and shaping audio rather than a narrow recording utility.
BandLab content is part of the ecosystem: Sonar connects with BandLab Sounds for loops and samples, as well as BandLab FX and instruments and the BandLab Project Library. BandLab Membership unlocks additional tools, effects, and content, while the free tier provides core production functions. Sonar is Windows-only, and the vendor states that Windows 11 and higher are supported; although it installs on Windows 10, that version is not officially supported. Documentation and community are the listed support channels. Choose Sonar if its Windows environment and deep editing set fit your workflow; look elsewhere if you need another operating system or officially supported Windows 10.
