Our verdict on Caddy Gateway

Caddy Gateway is an open-source, self-hosted Kubernetes controller for teams adopting the Kubernetes Gateway API with Caddy as the underlying web server. It watches Gateway API resources, reconciles them, generates Caddy JSON configuration, and applies changes through the Caddy Admin API. The controller is aimed at operators who want a focused Gateway API implementation and are comfortable managing the surrounding Caddy deployment themselves.

Its strongest fit is breadth within the Gateway API model. Caddy Gateway supports Gateway, HTTPRoute, GRPCRoute, TLSRoute, TCPRoute, UDPRoute, ReferenceGrant, BackendLBPolicy, and BackendTLSPolicy resources. It also supports dynamic configuration, no-downtime configuration updates, and bring-your-own Caddy deployments. Caddy can run as a Kubernetes Deployment or DaemonSet, while the deployment model remains self-hosted on Linux. This makes the product relevant for environments that already align their traffic management around Kubernetes Gateway API and Caddy rather than the older Kubernetes Ingress resource.
