BSCW is a shared-workspace and groupware platform for organizations that need documents, tasks, communications, calendars, and project workflows in one environment. It fits businesses, public and scientific organizations, schools, and universities, with support for small, mid-market, and enterprise teams. Workspaces organize documents and team information, while search, wikis, chat, audio/video conferences, meeting scheduling, and external sharing extend the collaboration scope beyond file storage.

The offering supports cloud use and self-hosted deployment, including server software for organizations that want to run BSCW themselves. A free self-hosted edition is available for eligible organizations, and a 90-day trial is offered. Hosted purchasing uses a price-calculator and contact-sales process rather than a published numeric plan structure. BSCW also supports browser extension deployment and apps across web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, giving teams multiple access points.

Document control is a central strength: users can access earlier versions, apply role- and permission-based controls, manage external access, and run approval workflows with digital flow folders. BSCW Social supports simultaneous browser-based Office editing through Microsoft Office Online, ONLYOFFICE, or Collabora Office integrations; Outlook, Thunderbird, and Mac calendars are also supported. Teams wanting broad workspace coordination, self-hosting, and governed document processes should consider BSCW. Organizations seeking a single, natively integrated online Office editor may prefer a more editor-focused alternative, since collaborative Office editing relies on supported add-ons and capabilities can vary between Social and Classic editions.
