Bookends is reference management software for students, researchers and professionals working across Mac, iPhone and iPad. It combines academic database and library searching with reference metadata importing, PDF organization, annotation, citation formatting and bibliography creation. Its library tools include reference groups, smart groups and folders, while shared libraries support collaboration. The product is particularly suited to researchers who want a Mac-centered workflow with iOS access for searching, reading, annotation and citation insertion.

Pricing is split by platform and license type. Standard for iOS costs $14.99 one time and removes the free-version reference and search limits. Premium for iOS costs $14.99 per year and adds cloud sync, multiple libraries, PDF annotation extraction and Mellel document scanning. A new single-user Mac license costs $74.99 one time and includes two years of free updates and unlimited references after registration. A Mac license upgrade costs $49.99 one time for owners of Bookends 11 or later, with two years of free updates. The Bookends + Mellel bundle costs $114.99 one time. A free plan is available, with limits described for the free Mac demo and iOS version.

Bookends fits writing workflows that use Microsoft Word, Mellel, Nisus Writer Pro, Tinderbox, DEVONthink or Scrivener. It also supports iCloud, AppleScript, a browser bookmarklet, a built-in browser and MCP-based AI library assistance. The combination of PDF annotation, synchronization, shared libraries and citation tools gives academic researchers a broad workspace rather than a citation-only utility. Choose it if you work primarily within the Apple ecosystem and want Mac and iOS coverage; choose an alternative if you need broader platform support or a single purchase covering both Mac and iOS.
