BlockNote is an open-source, block-based rich text editor for teams embedding structured document editing into web applications. It is particularly suited to React teams building editors with nested content, custom block types, configurable menus, and application-specific schemas. React bindings and ready-to-use UI components support common implementation paths, while vanilla JavaScript, Next.js, Mantine, Shadcn, and Ariakit are also part of its framework and integration scope. Deployment can run on a developer’s own infrastructure, and the editor is designed for web applications rather than native platforms.

The Community tier provides all blocks and UI components, drag-and-drop editing, slash commands and menus, real-time collaboration, and comments. It also makes XL packages free for open-source projects under GPL-3.0. For closed-source commercial applications, the Business plan costs $195 per month or $2,340 per year and adds a commercial license for XL packages, AI integration, multi-column layouts, exports to PDF, Docx, ODT, and Email, plus standard support. The commercial license covers one application per license. Enterprise adds custom licensing, dedicated and priority support, custom feature development, a private Slack channel with maintainers, and onboarding and integration guidance.

BlockNote’s standout strength is the breadth of its document model: teams can combine structured blocks, tables with cell styling and splitting, media blocks with configurable uploads, comments with threads and replies, and collaborative editing through Yjs providers. Its integration with ProseMirror and Tiptap can also fit teams already working in that ecosystem. The trade-off is the boundary between the free Community offering and paid XL capabilities, especially for closed-source products. Choose BlockNote when React-based structured editing and collaboration are central requirements; consider another editor if you need a lower-cost commercial path for those paid capabilities or a platform outside web applications.
