A focused desktop editor for experimenting with pixel sprites and animation.

Besprited is a free, open-source desktop application for creating and animating 2D sprites. Developed by Veritaware as a fork of LibreSprite, it targets pixel-art workflows for solo creators and small teams. Its feature set covers frame-based animation, onion skinning, editable palettes, layers, tiled drawing, and pixel-precise tools. Releases are available for Linux, macOS, and Windows, making it a practical fit for creators who want a desktop editor without a paid plan.
Animation is a central strength. Real-time previews help review motion while working, and onion skinning shows surrounding frames to support frame-by-frame edits. Users can edit multiple sprites at once, combine layers and frames, and switch between ready-made and custom palettes. Tiled drawing adds a focused option for repeating patterns and textures, while filled contour, polygon, and shading modes extend the pixel-precise drawing toolkit. QuickJS-ng scripting adds room for customized workflows beyond direct canvas editing.
Besprited’s narrow focus is also its clearest boundary. It is designed for pixel art and animated sprites rather than general illustration or a wider design pipeline, and it is available as a desktop application only. Support is centered on community resources and documentation. The GNU GPLv2 license is well suited to users seeking open-source software, while teams with different licensing requirements should review that model before adopting it. Choose Besprited for free sprite experimentation, animation work, and palette-driven pixel art; choose another tool if broader creative production or a different licensing approach is the priority.
