beets review
Free, open-source tagging and cataloging for command-line music library managers.

Beets is an open-source, command-line music library manager for people who want automated cataloging and consistent file organization. During directory imports, its autotagger looks up albums and tracks through MusicBrainz, corrects metadata, and can organize or rename files with configurable path formats. A searchable local database supports library queries, while plugins extend the system with artwork, lyrics, genres, acoustic fingerprinting, duplicate detection, transcoding, web browsing, and music-server connections.
As open-source software, beets is available without a commercial subscription. Its ecosystem reaches beyond MusicBrainz through Discogs, Beatport, Spotify, Tidal, and Deezer, while playback and server integrations include MPD, Plex, Kodi, Sonos, Emby, and Subsonic. The convert plugin handles audio transcoding, and the database plus command-line queries give users a way to inspect and manage large collections through repeatable workflows. Album-art fetching and embedding are available through optional plugins and extras rather than the core workflow.
Beets runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with self-hosted deployment and installation through Python package tools. That setup fits solo users and small teams comfortable configuring a command-line tool and selecting plugins for their preferred library processes. The optional web browser library and player interface can provide a browser-based view, but the product remains centered on command-line management. Choose beets when automated MusicBrainz cataloging, configurable folder structures, fingerprinting, and broad playback integration matter most; consider another music manager if you need a hosted service or a visual-first setup with minimal configuration.
