BASE, the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, is a free multidisciplinary search engine for academic web documents, operated by Bielefeld University Library. It is suited to researchers and other information seekers looking across scholarly material from multiple disciplines, including journal articles, books, reports and theses. The university reports more than 400 million records from over 11,000 sources, and says full texts for about 60% of indexed documents are freely accessible. BASE is available on the web and through an API.

Search and filtering are centered on metadata. Users can query fields such as author, subject, publication date, language and Open Access status, and filter by normalized document type. BASE also classifies some records under Dewey Decimal subject categories, including through automated classification. This makes it useful for targeted discovery across varied academic collections, but it is not a citation-graph, literature-mapping or recommendation tool. Readers who need those functions should look for a product built around citation relationships or paper recommendations.

For library services and other authorized clients, the documented OAI-PMH interface supports selective metadata harvesting, with oai_dc and base_dc export formats. That makes BASE relevant not only to individual searches but also to workflows that need to retrieve metadata subsets. Access is described as free without login, and the product is cloud-based; support is listed by email. Choose BASE for broad, metadata-led discovery and Open Access filtering, rather than as a substitute for a full-text collection or a tool for mapping research influence.
