Autolab review
Open-source programming-course autograding with grading workflows, APIs, and LMS roster sync.

Autolab is an open-source course management platform from Carnegie Mellon University for schools and universities running programming courses. Instructors can create autograded programming assignments, manage rosters and gradebooks, publish handouts and writeups, annotate code, apply late penalties and grace days, and display real-time scoreboards. Its focus is programming assessment rather than broad multi-subject testing, making it a particularly relevant fit for courses where submitted code is central to evaluation.
The grading workflow is its main point of depth. Autolab can distribute grading jobs to Docker containers or AWS virtual machines, while code annotation and feedback give instructors a way to respond directly to submissions. MOSS-based cheat detection adds a plagiarism review capability, and manual grading supports work that cannot be evaluated entirely through automated checks. A REST API and command-line client extend access beyond the web interface, giving technical teams additional ways to manage course operations and grading workflows.
Autolab also covers core course administration through gradebooks, roster management, late penalties, and grace days. Its ecosystem fit is useful but focused: Canvas and Moodle are listed integrations, while LTI support is described for course roster synchronization rather than a broader set of LMS workflows. Choose Autolab if open-source software, programming autograding, configurable grading jobs, and technical access through APIs matter most. Consider an alternative if you need wider assessment coverage or deeper LMS integration beyond programming-course workflows and roster synchronization.
Autolab pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Autogrades programming assignments with Docker and AWS-based grading jobs
- Combines code annotation, MOSS cheat detection, and manual grading
- Provides gradebooks, REST APIs, CLI access, and Canvas or Moodle integration
- Where it doesn't
- LTI support is limited to course roster synchronization
- Assessment breadth is narrower than general-purpose grading platforms
- Deployment is oriented toward school and organizational environments
