Audionaut review
A free, scriptable multitrack editor for structured audio work across desktop platforms.

Audionaut is a free, open-source desktop audio editor for multitrack recordings, stems, field recordings and session exports. It runs natively on macOS, Windows and Linux, covering cutting, arranging, fades, playlists, musical-time editing and WAV export. The workflow suits musicians, editors and technically minded creators who want structured audio projects, local processing and the ability to automate editing rather than rely only on a graphical interface.
Its standout feature set combines analysis with arrangement. Audionaut can detect segment boundaries, onsets and beats, while Auto Edit can create segments and assemble arrangements. Local stem separation divides audio into drums, bass, other and vocals. Recording includes punch-in and loop recording, and region-based editing works with synchronized playlists. Export is offline WAV with configurable sample rate, channels and bit depth. Command-line and MCP control extend the editor into scripted and AI-assisted workflows, while Ableton Link provides tempo and transport synchronization.
Audionaut is particularly focused on multitrack editing, stem work, analysis and repeatable workflows. Its open, human-readable project format supports inspectable project data, and the free open-source model keeps the core application accessible; a commercial licence is also available. Choose it if you need cross-platform desktop editing with scripting, local stem separation and synchronization. Choose another audio tool if MIDI sequencing, plugins, noise reduction, video editing or collaboration are central requirements.
