AstroPics Lab review
A free Windows desktop app for local AI denoising and astrophotography image processing.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
AstroPics Lab is a free Windows desktop application for amateur astrophotographers who want to reduce noise and adjust astronomical images. Its AI tools cover denoising, separating stars and objects into layers, enhancement, 2× upscaling and colorization of monochrome or weak-color images. The app also handles FITS and XISF, as well as TIFF, PNG and JPEG, making its file support more relevant to astrophotography than a general-purpose photo workflow.
Its processing tools go beyond denoising: histogram stretching with MTF and GHS algorithms sits alongside curves, levels, gradient removal and selective color tools. Automated processing pipelines are also included. This combination makes AstroPics Lab a fit for solo users and small-scale workflows that need astrophotography adjustments and AI assistance in one desktop application. The emphasis is specific, though; it is not positioned as a broad photo editor for everyday images.
The application is free, and the vendor says its AI models run locally, without cloud processing or subscriptions. That suits users who prefer an offline desktop workflow, but it also means the AI work runs on the user's own computer. AstroPics Lab is Windows-only, so users on other platforms should look elsewhere. Choose it if you want free, locally processed astrophotography tools and support for specialist image formats; consider an alternative if you need a cross-platform or general-purpose noise reduction tool.
