Apple ML-Sharp review
Open-source, local Gaussian inference for fast metric splats from one photo.

Apple ML-Sharp is an open-source research software project for photorealistic view synthesis from one photograph. It targets developers, researchers, and small teams that need a fast path from a single image to a 3D Gaussian representation. The model produces a metric representation with absolute scale, supporting camera movements that remain metric rather than purely relative. Processing runs locally, and the published deployment model is self-hosted.
Its standout capability is feedforward inference: the neural network predicts Gaussian splats in less than a second on a standard GPU. A Python CLI handles prediction and rendering, while model checkpoints download automatically and remain cached locally. Generated splats can be rendered interactively at high resolution for nearby views, exported as 3DGS PLY files, and used for CUDA trajectory-video rendering. PLY output is compatible with public Gaussian-splat renderers, giving the workflow a practical interchange point.
The open-source release is free and is aimed at non-commercial scientific research and academic development. The dedicated research-model license excludes commercial product use, so commercial teams should select a tool with terms that permit their intended deployment. The local workflow also places GPU, environment, and rendering responsibilities with the operator, with documentation as the listed support channel. Choose ML-Sharp when single-photo input, rapid local inference, metric scale, and PLY export are priorities; choose an alternative when you need commercial use rights, capture sources beyond photos, or a managed service.
Apple ML-Sharp pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Turns one photograph into a metric Gaussian representation in under a second
- Runs locally through a Python CLI with automatic checkpoint caching
- Exports PLY splats and renders views or CUDA trajectory videos
- Where it doesn't
- Model license excludes commercial product use
- Requires a standard GPU and local self-hosted setup
- Focuses on nearby views from a single photograph
