Apache Roller review
A free, open-source choice for organizations running multi-user blogs themselves.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Apache Roller is an open-source Java weblog server for personal, community, and group blogs. It is designed for organizations that want to operate their own blogging infrastructure rather than use a hosted SaaS platform. Multi-user support extends across multiple blogs, with group roles including owner, editor, drafter, admin, author, and limited permissions. The platform also includes comment moderation, spam-prevention controls, media uploads and management, and scheduled posts.
Roller’s feature set covers the core publishing and distribution needs of a multi-user blogging environment. Custom HTML and Velocity theme templates provide code-based theme editing, while built-in Lucene search supports weblog entries. RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 feeds are available for entries and comments. MetaWeblog API support allows external blogging clients to connect, and analytics tracking-code support provides a way to add measurement tools. These capabilities suit organizations that need control over content structure, roles, themes, and deployment.
The main trade-off is operational responsibility. Roller is self-hosted and is typically deployed with Apache Tomcat and MySQL, with Docker and other runtime options documented by the project. It is distributed at no charge under the Apache License, and the published plans do not include paid subscription tiers. Organizations with Java deployment experience and a need for granular multi-user permissions should consider Roller. Teams looking for a managed service, visual theme editing without code, or built-in AI features should choose a different blogging platform.
