Anipose review
A research-focused toolkit for turning multi-camera keypoints into filtered 3D pose trajectories.

Anipose is an open-source toolkit for markerless 3D pose estimation from multiple camera views, aimed at researchers analyzing animal behavior. It uses DeepLabCut to detect user-defined 2D keypoints, then calibrates cameras and triangulates those detections into 3D trajectories. Its scope is pose analysis rather than a general motion-capture production suite, making it a better fit for research workflows than character animation or conventional human mocap production.
The workflow covers calibration, reconstruction, and analysis. Calibration supports checkerboard, ChArUco, and ArUco boards; after triangulation, users can filter 2D and 3D poses, process video projects in batches, and generate labeled 2D, 3D, or combined videos. Anipose can also calculate angles between selected keypoints and standardize 3D coordinates using configured axes and a reference point. DeepLabCut is its stated integration for 2D detection, and the toolkit is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Anipose is free and open source, with self-hosted deployment and documentation as its listed support channel. That keeps the price barrier low, but installation in a Python environment and command-line operation make it better suited to technical research teams than users seeking a guided production interface. It exports CSV, H5, and AVI, and includes a hand-tracking tutorial, but it does not offer real-time output or retargeting. Choose it for multi-camera animal pose trajectories and downstream analysis; look elsewhere for real-time capture or animation-oriented workflows.
Anipose pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Calibrates multiple cameras and triangulates 2D keypoints into 3D trajectories
- Supports pose filtering, batch video processing, and labeled visualizations
- Calculates keypoint angles and standardizes 3D coordinates
- Where it doesn't
- Requires a Python environment and command-line operations
- Focused on animal behavior analysis, not character-animation workflows
- Does not provide real-time output or retargeting
