Alice review
A focused, free path from block-based coding to Java and object-oriented concepts.

Alice is a free, downloadable programming environment from Carnegie Mellon University for introducing learners to programming and computer science. Its block-based drag-and-drop interface supports 3D animations, interactive stories, games, virtual worlds, and VR world creation and playback. The software is designed for middle-school learners through university students and educators, with editions for Alice 2 and Alice 3. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The strongest learning path is its connection between visual programming and Java. Alice 3 emphasizes object-oriented programming concepts and can show generated Java code beside Alice code, helping learners connect blocks with text-based programming. NetBeans integration extends that path into Java development. Lessons, tutorials, exercises, projects, curricula, and classroom materials support both individual learning and teaching. The gallery of 3D models and character builder also give project-based learners material for creating stories and games.
Alice’s focus is intentionally specific: visual, 3D, project-based computer science learning rather than broad, browser-based coding coverage. It is free to all and open source, with Alice 2 and Alice 3 included in the free offering. That makes it a strong choice for educators and learners who want an accessible introduction to programming, object-oriented ideas, and Java through creative projects. Learners who require mobile access, browser-based lessons, or a wider range of programming environments should look beyond Alice.
