AGRICOLA is the National Agricultural Library’s catalog and discovery database for agricultural and applied sciences literature. It is designed for students, researchers, librarians, and professionals searching topics such as animal and veterinary sciences, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture, farming, agricultural economics, food and human nutrition, and environmental sciences. The database is available free online through the USDA National Agricultural Library SEARCH platform and covers more than five million records.

Its main strength is breadth across both subject areas and document types. AGRICOLA includes journal articles, books, government documents, conference proceedings, meeting abstracts, theses, dissertations, reports, patents, book chapters, audiovisual materials, and other scholarly, technical, and educational content. Coverage reaches from current publications back to the 15th century, giving historical research a place alongside recent literature. Searchers can use keywords, Boolean operators, phrases, truncation, and other search syntax techniques to refine results. This makes AGRICOLA a useful starting point for structured literature discovery, especially when a project spans multiple agricultural disciplines or requires older material.

The key limitation is that AGRICOLA is a bibliographic discovery service rather than a full-text database. Records may link to full text elsewhere, so finding an article, book, report, or thesis does not necessarily mean the document is available within AGRICOLA. Researchers who need immediate full-text article access should consider a service built around document delivery or full-text content instead. AGRICOLA is the better fit for free searching across agricultural and allied-science literature, including theses, dissertations, and conference material, while its web-only access and discovery focus make it less suitable as a standalone reading library.
