Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026

3DUNDERWORLD-SLS is open-source software for researchers and developers building structured-light 3D acquisition systems. It processes patterned-light image sequences captured by two or more cameras, reconstructing a point cloud from the camera images. The software is aimed at custom scanning systems rather than users seeking a ready-to-run desktop application, with support for camera calibration input and integration into other projects.

There is no paid tier: 3DUNDERWORLD-SLS is free and open source. Its published capabilities include CPU reconstruction and a CUDA GPU implementation, allowing developers to choose between CPU-based and GPU-based processing. OpenCV camera calibration XML input supports calibration workflows, while PLY and OBJ exports provide two formats for moving reconstructed point clouds into other tools. CMake-based compilation and test workflows are included for building the software from source.

Its main strength is flexibility for developers who need to assemble or extend a structured-light scanner. Libraries for integration and an extensible camera interface make it suitable for projects that control their own acquisition pipeline. The trade-off is system complexity: users must supply a multi-camera, patterned-light setup and work with source code rather than a hosted service or turnkey application. It also does not include mesh reconstruction or real-time capture. Choose 3DUNDERWORLD-SLS when control, extensibility, and point-cloud output matter; choose another product when you need an integrated scanning workflow or built-in mesh generation.

3DUNDERWORLD-SLS pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Free, open-source software with CPU and CUDA reconstruction
    • Exports reconstructed point clouds in PLY and OBJ formats
    • Libraries and extensible camera interfaces support integration projects
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires two or more cameras and a patterned-light projector
    • Does not provide mesh reconstruction or real-time capture
    • Distributed as source code and libraries, not a turnkey application
