Product configuration lets an electronics manufacturer offer customer-specific choices without treating every order as a one-off design. The key is to define the product family, its selectable attributes and compatibility rules, then ensure every valid selection maps to the right orderable variant and manufacturing data—especially its bill of materials (BOM) and route.

What product configuration means in electronics manufacturing

A configurable product is built from a defined set of attributes and permitted options. A customer or sales team selects values—for example, a communication module or enclosure—and the configuration model determines whether the selection is complete and valid. In documented product configurators, rules can include, exclude or bundle options; manufacturing-focused systems can use the resulting selection to produce a variant-specific BOM and route or routing. See SAP CPQ product configuration documentation, Microsoft’s product configuration models documentation and Infor LN configuration documentation.

The goal is not simply to show options in a sales interface. It is to make a customer selection precise enough to support quoting, engineering and production. Whether that connection is automatic depends on the chosen systems and their implementation; a software capability description is not a guarantee that a particular deployment has the required integration.

Start with the shared product platform

Define the product family before listing options. Identify the stable platform—the components, interfaces and processes shared by its variants—and separate it from elements that customers can select. This boundary helps prevent the option list from becoming a collection of loosely related custom products.

Possible electronics attributes include power supply, communication module, I/O configuration, display, enclosure, connector, cable, firmware package and accessories. These are examples, not a universal checklist. An electronics-focused article by MRPeasy, published by EE Times, illustrates this kind of configurable product framing: “What is product configuration?”

Define attributes and allowed values

For each customer-selectable attribute, document the values that are actually orderable and how the attribute behaves. A useful model records whether a choice is required, whether it has a default and what other choices affect it. These details make the model testable and help sales, engineering and manufacturing interpret a selection consistently.

Model element What to define Example question
Attribute The decision a user can make Which communication module is available?
Allowed values The permitted choices for that attribute Are Ethernet and cellular both supported?
Required status Whether a value must be selected before the configuration is complete Must every order specify an enclosure?
Default behavior Whether a value is preselected and what that means for an order Is a standard cable assumed, or must it be chosen?
Dependencies and exclusions Which combinations are permitted, required or prohibited Does this display require a particular controller?

Required fields matter operationally: a configuration that looks selectable but is incomplete can still be unusable for a quote or production handoff. SAP CPQ documentation describes required attributes and input forms, and notes that required selections must be made to complete a configuration. Its cited guides identify version 2606, so verify the applicable behavior against the release deployed in your environment: SAP CPQ product configuration guide.

Encode compatibility rules, not just option lists

A list of individually valid options does not establish that every combination is buildable. Add rules that express the product’s real constraints: which selections must appear together, which options rule one another out and which choices are required when another choice is made. SAP describes inclusion, exclusion and bundling rules; Infor describes decision rules and constraints used to ensure a selected product can be built.

  • Required selection: The configuration cannot be completed until a necessary value is supplied.

These rules should reflect engineering and manufacturing facts, not merely simplify a user interface. A useful validation set includes ordinary combinations, boundary cases and combinations that must be rejected. Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management documentation covers configuration models, components and model testing: product configuration models and testing a product configuration model.

Connect a valid selection to the product and the factory

A configuration becomes useful to manufacturing when the selected options resolve to an orderable variant and the data needed to build it. In documented systems, that can include a distinct BOM and manufacturing route or routing. Microsoft describes distinct variants with unique BOMs and routes; Infor describes generating BOMs and routings from selected features and options.

  1. Capture the selection. Record the selected attribute values and the model or version used to validate them.
  2. Resolve the variant. Determine how the selection becomes an orderable product or configuration record in the manufacturer’s systems.
  3. Generate or select the BOM. Confirm that the selected components, quantities and applicable substitutions are represented correctly.
  4. Resolve the route. Confirm that the variant receives the required operations or routing data for its production process.
  5. Validate the handoff. Test the resulting product and manufacturing records in the systems that will execute the order.

Do not assume a product configurator automatically synchronizes all downstream data. Microsoft, Infor and Oracle documentation describe relevant configuration and BOM capabilities, but the exact mapping, system boundaries and setup depend on the implementation. Oracle CPQ documentation, for example, discusses mapping selections into BOM instances and distinguishes standard, model and option-class structures: Oracle CPQ documentation. Confirm behavior with the technical owners of the manufacturer’s CPQ, engineering and ERP data.

Keep one product definition aligned across functions

Configuration rules can affect sales promises, engineering definition and factory execution. If those teams maintain conflicting versions of what is allowed, an apparently valid sale may not correspond to a buildable product. Siemens describes a shared variability definition across product planning, engineering, manufacturing and service, with constraints reusable across software, electrical and mechanical domains: Teamcenter product configuration documentation.

As an implementation practice, assign owners for attributes, option values and rules; review them when components, suppliers or production processes change; and validate the revised model before release. The exact approval process is a manufacturer decision, not a universal software requirement. Its purpose is to prevent a rule change in one function from silently invalidating product or factory data elsewhere.

Choose an implementation approach by fit, not by label

Configuration capabilities appear in CPQ, ERP and PLM contexts. Those labels indicate where a capability may sit in a product lifecycle; they do not establish that one category or platform is best for every manufacturer. Vendor documentation describes features, not neutral comparative performance or a guaranteed fit.

Evaluation area What to verify
Model expressiveness Can the system represent the attributes, allowed values, dependencies and exclusions your product family needs?
Incomplete and invalid selections How does it identify required fields and prevent or explain invalid combinations?
Manufacturing output How does a valid selection map to orderable variants, BOMs and routes or routings?
Data consistency How are product, engineering and manufacturing records kept aligned across systems?
Change and release control How are rules and product structures reviewed, tested, versioned and released for the applicable software release?

Use representative products and real edge cases when evaluating an approach. Ask for the actual handoff from a customer selection to the relevant product and manufacturing records, and identify which system owns each definition. The cited documentation covers SAP CPQ version 2606, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management (including a setup page last updated 2026-07-01), Infor LN documentation identified as 2022.x, Siemens Teamcenter and Oracle CPQ. Confirm current release behavior, licensing and implementation requirements for the deployment under consideration; the documentation does not provide an independent vendor ranking.
