PlanGrid is no longer available to new customers. Autodesk directs prospective buyers to Autodesk Forma Build, which it describes as the next evolution of PlanGrid and BIM 360. That makes the practical choice for a new purchase Procore versus Forma Build—not Procore versus a newly purchased PlanGrid license. Existing PlanGrid customers should check their renewal and support terms before planning a change.

Is PlanGrid still available, and what is the current comparison?

Autodesk’s PlanGrid product page says PlanGrid is no longer available for purchase by net-new customers and points new buyers to Forma Build. PlanGrid remains relevant to organizations already using it, but its availability and contract terms should not be assumed to match Forma Build’s. Autodesk’s PlanGrid page

Autodesk presents Forma Build as combining capabilities from PlanGrid and BIM 360 with additional workflows. That is Autodesk’s description of product lineage, not proof that every PlanGrid function has an identical counterpart. If you are evaluating a new system, compare Procore with Forma Build against the tasks your teams actually perform. If you already have PlanGrid, include the existing subscription, project access, and transition requirements in the decision.

How do Procore and Forma Build differ in scope?

Both vendors describe tools for project teams in the field and office, but their published overviews are not a neutral, complete feature-parity matrix. Similar labels do not establish identical behavior, licensing, or workflow depth.

Which workflows should you verify?

Build the comparison around a representative project, not a list of feature names. Have the people who will use the system test the same tasks in each eligible product and record where handoffs, permissions, or extra steps differ.

Drawings and document control

  • Check how revisions are received, reviewed, distributed, and identified in the field.
  • Test sheet markups, offline access, and the connection between a drawing and related issues or RFIs.
  • Confirm who can publish, edit, view, or approve documents, and whether field staff can find the current version quickly.

Field capture and follow-up

  • Run a realistic issue from photo or form capture through assignment, review, and closure.
  • Test daily logs, punch lists, and progress photos where they are part of your process.
  • Verify which user groups can submit information and who must review or resolve it.

Project controls and cost workflows

  • Walk through an RFI and submittal from creation to response and closeout, including notifications and responsibility handoffs.
  • If meetings, schedules, assets, budgets, change orders, or forecasts matter to your project, test those workflows rather than assuming the product overview guarantees the required depth.
  • Check whether cost information is visible to the right roles and how it relates to the rest of your project records.

Integrations, migration, and adoption

  • List the systems that must exchange information with the platform and test the specific integrations your team relies on.
  • For an existing PlanGrid account, trial representative live projects and verify account access, data transfer, mobile use, and staff training before committing to a transition. Autodesk’s documentation describes account linking and Forma Build trials, but does not establish every migration detail.
  • Have field and office staff test on the devices and under the connectivity conditions they actually encounter.

What should existing PlanGrid customers know about licensing?

Do not assume that a PlanGrid license automatically covers Forma Build. Autodesk support says the products use separate subscriptions: a PlanGrid subscription is needed for PlanGrid projects, and a Forma Build subscription is needed for Forma Build projects, even though the mobile app can provide access to both project types. Confirm each team member’s assigned subscription against the projects they need to use before procurement or migration. Autodesk subscription and app guidance

How do Procore and Autodesk pricing compare?

Procore says its annual fee depends on the products selected and the amount of construction activity, with pricing based on products and Annual Turnover. Its pricing page advertises unlimited users, data storage, and support within its contract model and directs buyers to request pricing. Treat those as Procore’s stated terms, then confirm the applicable package, geography, contract, and renewal details in the offer you receive. Procore pricing

Autodesk’s PlanGrid page routes prospective new buyers to Forma Build and links to pricing information, but the reviewed official material does not provide a comparable numeric quote. There is therefore no substantiated public price comparison here. Compare written offers on the same scope, project volume, user groups, term, support, implementation needs, data arrangements, and renewal assumptions; a headline subscription amount alone may omit material differences.

How should you choose?

  1. Establish eligibility. If you are a new buyer, compare Procore with Forma Build. If you already use PlanGrid, first document your current license, renewal and support terms, and project-access needs.
  2. Choose the workflows that matter most. Identify the drawing, field-capture, project-control, and cost tasks the software must support. Include the roles responsible for each handoff.
  3. Run a matched pilot. Use representative projects and repeat the same tasks in the products you can actually purchase. Record usability, permissions, offline needs, integrations, and transition effort.
  4. Request comparable written quotes. Give each vendor the same assumptions for products, construction volume, user groups, term, support, implementation, data, and renewal. Confirm any advertised contract terms in the actual offer.
  5. Decide on total fit, not a universal ranking. Weigh workflow coverage, field adoption, integration and migration risk, licensing, contract terms, and the quote for your organization.

What is the background to PlanGrid’s transition?

Autodesk completed its acquisition of PlanGrid on December 20, 2018. The announcement described PlanGrid as field-oriented software for access to project plans, punch lists, tasks, progress photos, daily field reports, submittals, and related information. Autodesk’s acquisition FAQ at the time reported approximately 12,000 customers and 120,000 paid users; those are historical 2018 figures, not current counts. The announcement also reported a transaction value of $875 million net of cash, which is ownership history rather than evidence of present-day product quality or market share.
