“Static” in Pro Tools is a symptom, not a single fault: it may be hiss, hum, crackling, digital clicks, or distortion. First establish whether it is present in the recorded audio or only while monitoring, then trace the signal path to find where it enters. If the problem coincides with an AAE -6099 or -6101 error, check the audio device’s supported buffer settings before changing anything else.

Identify the sound and where you hear it

Listen closely and describe the symptom before troubleshooting. Note whether it is continuous, periodic, crackling, clicking or popping, or distorted. These descriptions do not identify a cause by themselves; they help narrow down which part of the setup to inspect.

Next, determine whether the noise is printed into a recording or heard only during monitoring. Record a short test, then play it back. If the noise is in the file, investigate the input and recording path. If the file sounds clean but the noise returns while monitoring or playing back, inspect the relevant routing and monitoring/output path. Keep track of when the symptom occurs rather than treating every noise as an audio-file problem.

Trace the signal path from source to output

Follow the audio in order, checking each part of the path that applies to your setup. For a USB microphone input, Avid describes the chain as microphone → XLR cable → interface preamp → USB connection → computer device driver → Pro Tools. Other rigs may have different sources, connections, or monitoring routes, so use your actual setup as the map.

  1. Source and input: Check the microphone or other source, the selected input, and the connection at both ends.
  2. Cable and interface: Inspect the cable and interface connection. If a cable is a plausible fault, compare with a known-good cable of the same connection and cable type. A replacement is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
  3. Computer connection and driver: Confirm the interface is powered and connected. Check the interface maker’s current driver instructions for your model and operating system.
  4. Pro Tools routing: Verify that the intended input and output are selected and that the track and playback routing match your setup.
  5. Monitoring and output: Check the path you hear through, including any hardware monitoring route as well as Pro Tools playback.

Avid’s guidance for an interface Pro Tools does not recognize also calls for checking its power and connection and installing the current device driver. The precise steps vary by interface and operating system; follow the instructions for your device rather than assuming one universal setup.

Check buffer settings when errors point to the audio device

If static-like interruptions occur alongside AAE -6099 or -6101 errors, inspect the Hardware Buffer Size in Setup > Playback Engine. Avid’s -6099 support article warns: “Not all hardware configurations support 32 or 64 sample buffer sizes.” Choose a setting supported by the audio device; do not assume the smallest available value will work on every system.

Avid’s -6101 guidance includes increasing Hardware Buffer Size as a troubleshooting step. That is specific to the -6101 error, not evidence that buffer size causes every hiss, hum, crackle, or click. Change the setting deliberately and compare the result. A larger buffer can make monitoring less responsive, so consider that trade-off when testing.

Verify clocking when digital audio is involved

If your signal path includes digital I/O, check that the devices’ clock source and sample-rate-conversion settings are configured for the actual connections. Avid’s archived Pro Tools 12.1 and HD Software 12.1 release notes document a model-specific case: an HD OMNI receiving a digital source with a mismatched clock and sample-rate conversion disabled can produce noise. This example is not a general diagnosis for all interfaces or Pro Tools versions. Consult current documentation for your hardware and software before changing clock settings.

Make controlled comparisons

Change one variable at a time and repeat the same short recording or playback test. Record whether the noise changes at the source, in the recorded file, or only in monitoring. This makes it easier to tell whether a change affected the input, device/driver path, Pro Tools playback, or output route.

  • Noise in the recording: Focus first on the source, input, cable, interface, and recording route.
  • Noise only while monitoring: Compare the monitoring route with Pro Tools playback and check the relevant output path.
  • Noise with an AAE error: Check the error-specific guidance and the interface’s supported buffer settings.
  • Digital connection in the path: Verify clock and conversion configuration for the connected devices.

For the error-specific steps, see Avid’s AAE -6099 support article and AAE -6101 guidance. For input-chain and device-recognition checks, consult Avid’s USB interface input troubleshooting and interface recognition guidance, along with the current documentation for your own interface. Avid’s clock-mismatch example is in the archived Pro Tools 12.1 read-me.
