Choose the exact figure, not the category label. A prize figure can be the sensible entry point when it depicts the character you want at a delivered price and size that fit your shelf. A scale figure can be the better choice when a particular pose, sculpt, or larger display presence matters enough to justify its price, footprint, and waiting time. Neither label guarantees superior paint, sculpting, or value.
The most reliable comparison is model by model: verify the total local cost, character and pose, manufacturer dimensions (including bases, weapons, and effects), availability status, and the specific product photos and description. The official examples below show why broad rules such as “all prize figures are cheap” or “all scale figures are better” are too crude.
What prize and scale labels actually tell you
Prize figures
Banpresto’s official site has a prize-product category for licensed character figures. That establishes a distribution category, not a universal price, size, or quality standard. The available official result does not provide a comparable One Piece item’s current dimensions and price, so a responsible comparison must use the exact Banpresto model and the retailer’s current listing rather than an assumed category average.
In practice, a prize designation is most useful as a clue to how a product is positioned and sold. It does not tell you whether a particular sculpt will suit your collection, whether its base will fit a narrow shelf, or what it will cost after shipping and taxes in your country.

Scale figures
A scale label communicates a stated character-to-figure ratio when the manufacturer specifies one. MegaHouse’s S.O.C. Portgas D. Ace, for example, is explicitly listed as 1/8 scale. That ratio is informative, but it is not a footprint guarantee: a seated pose, outstretched limbs, weapon, effects, and base can make two figures with the same nominal scale occupy very different space.
MegaHouse’s Portrait.Of.Pirates (P.O.P.) line is presented as a series depicting characters from the One Piece television anime. Its English catalog lists individual models, Japanese suggested retail prices, and release timing. The catalog contains multiple sub-series and poses, so “P.O.P.” is not one uniform size or price tier.

These are Japanese manufacturer or official One Piece listing specifications accessed on October 13, 2026. Japanese suggested retail prices are generally shown before shipping; they are not current United States prices, delivered prices in another country, or aftermarket values.

Compare the total cost, not the headline price
The Japanese amounts in the table are useful reference points for the listed P.O.P. examples, but they should not be treated as what you will pay. Your actual budget should include the item price, domestic or international shipping, sales tax or VAT, customs or brokerage charges where applicable, and any premium on a secondhand or scarce release. A preorder may also involve a deposit, balance payment, or cancellation policy that changes the effective cost.
Build a delivered-cost line
- Record the exact model name and edition. Character names can have several P.O.P. releases, prize versions, color variants, or reissues.
- Use a retailer that ships to your address. Enter your country and postcode so shipping and tax are calculated instead of inferred from a Japanese suggested retail price.
- Separate recurring charges from one-time charges. Shipping, import fees, and payment fees may be charged once; a preorder balance may be collected later.
- Check the condition and market status. New, opened, damaged-box, used, preorder, restock, and discontinued listings are different purchases even when the product name is similar.
- Write down the delivered total before comparing categories. A lower sticker price can lose its advantage when shipping or resale premiums are added.
Do not infer a universal price gap from the available records. They document several P.O.P. prices but do not provide a matched Banpresto One Piece item with a current price and dimensions. The fair comparison is one chosen prize model against one chosen scale model that you could actually buy.
Character and pose should decide before prestige
A cheaper figure of your favorite character can be a better collection choice than a more expensive figure of a character you only like casually. Start with the character, costume, and scene you want on the shelf. Then compare sculpts within that shortlist.

Use the pose as a selection criterion
MegaHouse describes the S.O.C. concept as popular characters in relaxed seated poses. That makes pose a defining part of the product identity rather than a minor variation. A seated Ace may communicate a different mood from a dynamic standing or action pose, even before you consider price or scale.

Check facial expression, hand position, costume version, accessories, base shape, and whether a weapon or effect is permanently attached, removable, or merely shown for illustration. A series name does not substitute for inspecting the sculpt you will receive.
Do not let a scale number choose the character for you
The 1/8 designation on the S.O.C. Ace is a useful specification, but it does not make that figure automatically preferable to a non-scale prize release. If the prize version captures the character, outfit, and expression you actually want, its personal value may exceed that of a technically larger or more expensive alternative.
Measure your display space in three dimensions
Manufacturers may state height, width, depth, or a combined measurement. Read what each number includes. The Yamato listing measures height to the top of the head and width including the weapon, demonstrating why a figure can fit vertically yet fail across a shelf. A base, flowing hair, coat, sword, or effect part may extend beyond the body.
A shelf-check procedure
- Measure clear height, width, and depth. Account for the shelf lip, cabinet doors, lighting, and neighboring figures.
- Add a handling margin. Leave room to lift the base out, dust the figure, and avoid touching fragile parts against the wall or glass.
- Match the manufacturer’s measurement terms. If a listing gives weapon-inclusive width, compare it with your available width rather than the character’s body width.
- Check the base footprint. A tall figure can be stable on a compact base, while a low or dynamic pose may spread widely.
- Plan for the final pose. If the product includes alternate parts, measure the widest configuration you intend to display.
When a listing omits one dimension, treat the missing measurement as unknown and seek a model-specific drawing, retailer specification, or reliable owner measurement before committing to a tight cabinet. Do not assume that two figures described with the same scale label will occupy the same shelf area.
Availability and release timing change the decision
The P.O.P. catalog combines past releases with announced future releases. Its dates extend from late 2025 through March 2027, so a date on the catalog is not proof that a product is currently in stock where you live.

Classify the listing before paying
- Announced future release: The product has a planned date, but production or shipping timing can change.
- Active preorder: A retailer is accepting orders; read the deposit, cancellation, and balance terms.
- Released and in stock: The retailer can dispatch the item now, subject to its stated inventory.
- Restock: A previously released product is scheduled or rumored to return; confirm that the listing is an official reissue rather than an old page.
- Secondhand: Condition, missing parts, box damage, authenticity, and seller history become part of the decision.
The official ONE PIECE.com records for Yamato and S.O.C. Ace document their past release dates and specifications. They do not guarantee current stock. Confirm release-region timing and inventory with the seller you can actually use.
Finish and construction: inspect the individual product
One Banpresto Spain retail listing describes a particular MegaHouse P.O.P. Nico Robin as a pre-painted PVC and ABS figure in closed packaging. That is evidence about that listing, not a materials specification for every One Piece figure, every P.O.P. release, or every prize product.
For any candidate, inspect the product description for stated materials, assembly, and packaging. Use clear, model-specific photographs to examine paint boundaries, facial details, translucent parts, seams, support rods, and the base. Independent reviews can help identify assembly or paint issues when they clearly concern the same edition, but do not transfer a reviewer’s observations from one sculpt to another.
A category-level promise such as “scale always has better paint” is not established by the official records available here. Treat finish as a question to answer for the exact sculpt, not as an automatic consequence of its label or price.
A repeatable buying workflow
Step 1: Define the non-negotiables
Write down the character, costume or story version, maximum delivered budget, available shelf dimensions, and the latest date by which you want the figure. If the character is non-negotiable, say so; if the pose is non-negotiable, describe it. This prevents a premium figure of the wrong subject from winning on prestige alone.
Step 2: Find one or more exact candidates
Search by the full manufacturer and model name, not only “One Piece scale figure” or “One Piece prize figure.” Record the edition, release status, listed dimensions, materials, and what accessories are included. For a P.O.P. candidate, use the catalog entry and then verify a retailer’s regional listing.

Step 3: Verify the space before comparing price
Compare the listed height, width, and depth with your measured clearances. Include weapon and effect extensions and leave a handling margin. Reject a figure that cannot be displayed safely, even if its price is attractive.

Step 4: Calculate the delivered total
Use the checkout total for your country, including shipping and taxes. If the item is imported, identify who collects duties and whether a later carrier charge is possible. For secondhand items, include the cost of missing-part replacement or a protective case only if you genuinely need it.
Step 5: Check authenticity and condition
Compare packaging photographs, manufacturer markings, included parts, and seller details. Ask for photos of the actual item when buying used. A sealed box is not, by itself, proof that every component is present or undamaged; assess the seller’s description and return policy.
Step 6: Make a value judgment specific to you
Ask what the extra money changes: the desired character, a better-fitting pose, a larger presence, a more convincing expression, or simply a brand name. If you cannot name a change you value, the premium may not improve your collection. If the exact pose is the reason you started shopping, a lower-priced alternative that lacks it may be a false saving.

You are starting a collection or testing a character
Begin by locating a Banpresto prize figure of the character you want, then verify its exact dimensions and current local delivered price. This limits the initial financial commitment without assuming that every prize figure is small or inexpensive. If the sculpt and shelf fit satisfy you, you have a useful first piece; if not, you have learned which details matter before committing to a premium release.

You want a specific premium pose
Compare the exact P.O.P. model that offers the pose with any alternatives. Confirm the weapon or effect width, the release status, and the full delivered cost. A premium is easier to justify when it buys the expression, costume, or composition you were specifically seeking rather than an abstract quality ranking.

You have limited cabinet space
Prioritize published dimensions and base footprint over category. A shorter seated figure may suit a shallow shelf, while a dynamic figure can consume more width than its height suggests. Keep the manufacturer’s measurement scope beside your shelf measurements so you do not compare body-only dimensions with weapon-inclusive dimensions.
You collect one character in several versions
Choose the version that adds a distinct pose, costume, or scene. Before buying another release, compare the sculpt and footprint with what you already own. A repeat character can be worthwhile when the composition is genuinely different, but a similar pose may not justify the additional cost and space.
You are deciding between preorder and an older release
Compare certainty rather than only price. A preorder offers access to an announced model but carries schedule and payment terms. An older release may be available immediately but could involve secondhand condition or a resale premium. Verify the seller’s actual stock and return policy in either case.

- Using Japanese suggested retail as a local budget: The listed P.O.P. figures exclude shipping and do not represent your taxes, duties, currency conversion, or resale premium.
- Assuming a series name fixes the size: P.O.P. includes different characters, sub-series, poses, and dimensions.
- Ignoring accessories in measurements: Weapons and effects can make the required width much larger than the body.

Bottom line: choose the figure that earns its shelf space
For a new or budget-conscious collector, a Banpresto prize figure of the right character is a sensible starting point after you confirm its actual local price and dimensions. For a collector who values a particular premium pose or a larger display statement, an exact P.O.P. model may be worth the additional cost and space—but only after checking the delivered total, accessory-inclusive measurements, and availability. Put the two item pages side by side, identify the concrete difference you care about, and buy that difference rather than the category label.
