If someone has shared intimate photos of you without permission, first make sure you are safe, then record where the images appear and report them to the site hosting them. Search-engine removal and hash-based tools can help, but neither guarantees that every copy is erased. This guide focuses on intimate or sexual images shared without consent—often called image-based abuse or nonconsensual intimate images. If ordinary private photos surfaced because an account or device was compromised, you will also need to secure that account or device.
What to do first if someone shared your intimate photos
- Check immediate safety. If you face a threat of physical harm, stalking, or coercion, contact local emergency services or authorities. Ask someone you trust to help with reporting if you feel overwhelmed. You are not to blame: agreeing to take or privately share an image does not mean agreeing to its public distribution.
- Record where the images appear. Note each page or post URL, the site or platform, any visible account name, and when you found it. Add report or case numbers as you receive them. Do not make extra copies of explicit images, particularly if the person depicted was under 18. Google recommends recording where the images were found to support removal requests.
- Report each post to its host. Use the report option near the post or the service’s help center, and provide the exact URL. State that the intimate image was posted without the depicted person’s consent.
- Request removal from search results separately. A search engine can remove a result without deleting the file from the website hosting it.
- Consider a hash-based tool. Depending on the age of the person depicted when the image was made, StopNCII or NCMEC’s Take It Down may help participating platforms detect matching copies.
- If there is extortion or a minor is involved, get help promptly. Do not pay or send more material in response to demands. Use the guidance in the sections below.
Report the image to the site or platform hosting it
Removal starts with the service where the image is posted. Reporting forms differ, so use the platform’s current in-product report option or help center. Include the post’s exact URL and explain that the image is intimate and was shared without consent. If the service lets you report several URLs, list each location; otherwise submit separate reports and keep the reference numbers in your incident log.
In the United States, the FTC explains that the Take It Down Act requires covered platforms to provide a way to request removal and, after a valid request, remove the reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours. This is a U.S. legal requirement for covered platforms, not a promise that every copy across the internet will disappear. If a covered platform has no working reporting route or has not removed the material within that period, you can report the issue to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. Remove search results as well as the hosted post
A search result and the original image are separate things to remove. Google says it may take qualifying personal sexual imagery out of Search while the image remains available at its original URL or elsewhere. Contact the host as well as making a search-removal request.

Google’s stated criteria include imagery that shows the person nude, in a sexual act, or in an intimate state; was made available without that person’s consent; and is not being used to commercialize the person’s identity. The person depicted or an authorized representative can submit a request through Google’s personal sexual content removal process. Google says its personal-content policies apply globally, but legal remedies and procedures can differ by location.
Use the right image-matching tool for the person’s age
Hash-based services can help participating platforms find matching copies. They do not guarantee removal everywhere, and they do not replace reports to the host or search engine.

For a child’s image, do not download, forward, or re-upload the material to preserve evidence. Use the service’s instructions rather than circulating another copy.
If someone is threatening to share images unless you pay
Extortion can escalate when a person keeps engaging or provides more material. The FTC advises reporting threats to local law enforcement and the FBI. If a minor is involved, report the situation to the NCMEC CyberTipline.

- Do not pay, send additional images, or give the person access to financial accounts or devices.
- Stop engaging, block the person, and report the account or messages to the service.
- Tell someone you trust and ask them to help with reporting and next steps.

When a minor is depicted
If an explicit image was made when the person depicted was under 18, involve a parent or guardian or another trusted adult if it is safe to do so. Report the incident to law enforcement and NCMEC’s CyberTipline, and use the platform’s reporting process and Take It Down. Do not download, forward, or re-upload the image or video. Find support and help with reporting
In the United States, the National Domestic Violence Hotline offers support by phone at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), by text (send START to 88788), and through live chat. For child-related cases, the FTC lists NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST; see NCMEC’s help and CyberTipline information. If you are outside the United States, contact local victim-support and legal organizations; the available legal remedies depend on your location.
