A chatbot is meaningfully local only when the selected model performs inference on your device and the conversation is not sent to a remote model. That can keep prompt text, chat history and attached documents on the computer, but “local” is not a blanket guarantee: the same application may offer cloud models, web search, plug-ins, updates and diagnostics that still use the network.
Before entering a sensitive question, trace the exact path of that conversation. Confirm the active model, identify every optional online feature, read the provider’s current privacy policy, and secure the device and its backups. Treat policy statements as descriptions of intended handling—not as independent audits or proof that your configuration is private.
What “local” means—and what it does not
In a local deployment, the language model files are downloaded to your computer and the model generates a response using that computer’s processor, graphics processor or other accelerators. The prompt and response can therefore remain on the device instead of being sent to a hosted inference service. This is the strongest privacy advantage for questions involving health, finances, legal matters, work secrets or personal relationships.
Local inference does not automatically make the entire application offline. A program can run a downloaded model locally while connecting for model discovery, downloads, software updates, telemetry, web search, cloud fallback, plug-ins or document services. It also does not protect information from someone who can unlock the computer, read its files, inspect backups or capture the screen.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.

“Private” is similarly narrower than “local.” Privacy depends on the model endpoint, network behavior, storage location, access controls, retention and diagnostics for the particular conversation. Ask what happens to this prompt in this mode, rather than relying on a product label.
What the published policies actually establish
LM Studio: local and online modes in one desktop app
LM Studio’s policy says that when a user downloads and runs a model locally, messages, chat histories and documents are saved locally and are not transmitted from the system. The same policy distinguishes cloud models and web search, which are separate online features. It also notes that internet access is needed to search for and download models and to receive software updates. Read the LM Studio Desktop App Privacy Policy (effective June 2026) for the current wording and check the mode shown for the conversation.
That is a vendor statement about the product’s intended behavior. It is not an independent security audit, and it does not establish that a particular plug-in, operating-system backup or user configuration will behave identically.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOllama: a content/metadata distinction
Ollama’s policy says: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” The policy, last updated March 2026, also says the service may collect limited device and usage metadata, such as an app version and request counts, while excluding prompt and response content from that metadata. It separately describes cloud-hosted models, so verify which model endpoint your client is calling. See the Ollama Privacy Policy.

Keeping content off the provider’s servers and eliminating all network traffic are different goals. A local request may be private in content while the application still sends limited operational information.
Open WebUI: self-hosting with configuration responsibility
Open WebUI documentation describes offline and self-hosted deployments and provides configuration controls for chat-data privacy and encryption. Those pages explain how the software can be operated; they are not an independent security review. In a self-hosted setup, the administrator remains responsible for network exposure, authentication, server logs, file permissions, backups and any connected model provider. Consult the Open WebUI FAQ and its chat-data privacy and encryption documentation.
Apple’s hybrid design is a separate case
Apple describes a system that first checks whether a task can be completed on device. If a server-based model is needed, relevant request data can be sent to Private Cloud Compute. Apple states that “The data sent to and returned by Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple.” This statement applies to Apple’s described system, not to local-chat applications generally. Read the Apple Intelligence & Privacy disclosure for the scope and conditions.
Compare the three common workflows
| Workflow | Prompt destination | Network dependency | Retention and visibility | Practical suitability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Device-only model | Inference occurs on the computer running the downloaded model. | The chosen model can work without a connection; downloads, updates and optional tools may still need one. | Chats and documents may be local files. Device users, backups and malware can still access them; provider visibility depends on the application’s policy. | Requires a compatible device and a model that gives acceptable answers. Model-specific requirements and quality must be checked in current runtime documentation. |
| Hybrid application | Some prompts use a local model; others can go to a cloud model or service. | Cloud fallback, web search, plug-ins and hosted document processing require connectivity. | Local and remote retention rules can differ within one app. Metadata may be collected even when content stays local. | Offers convenience or stronger models, but every conversation needs an endpoint check. |
| Hosted chatbot | The prompt is sent to the provider’s online model endpoint. | Requires the provider’s service and account connection. | Provider retention, staff access, logging and account security govern exposure. | Usually easiest to use, but it is not device-only processing. |
Do not infer model accuracy, advice quality or hardware requirements from this privacy comparison. The available policies do not establish comparative answer quality or minimum device specifications.

Trace a sensitive prompt before you send it
- Identify the active endpoint. In the chat’s model selector, confirm that the model is downloaded on the device, not labeled cloud, hosted or provider-managed. If the interface does not make this clear, stop and consult the application’s current documentation.
- List features attached to the conversation. Disable web search, cloud fallback, plug-ins, remote tools and hosted document extraction unless you deliberately accept their data paths. A local model can be paired with an online retrieval tool, turning an otherwise local exchange into a mixed workflow.
- Test the network boundary with harmless text. While disconnected, start a non-sensitive conversation. If generation works, the selected model may be local; if the feature fails, reconnect and investigate which component requires the service. This is a diagnostic, not proof that no background traffic exists.
- Read the current policy in four separate categories. Look for prompt and response content, chat-history storage, diagnostics/telemetry and device or usage metadata. Note the policy’s effective or update date and whether it distinguishes local from cloud processing.
- Find the storage location. Determine where chat databases, attachments, model files and logs reside. Apply operating-system permissions and full-disk encryption, and include those locations in your backup and deletion plan.
- Check the people and systems that can reach the device. Use a separate user account where appropriate, lock the screen, protect the account that runs the chatbot and review synchronization or backup services that may copy its files elsewhere.
- Sanitize the question. Remove names, account numbers, exact addresses, identifying images and unnecessary excerpts. Local processing reduces transmission risk; it does not make oversharing harmless.
Network, metadata and storage pitfalls
Model downloads and updates
Downloading a model is an online event even if every later response is generated locally. Obtain model files and application updates only from sources you trust, because a compromised download or update can undermine privacy and integrity before inference begins. Keep a record of which model version you installed so that a later automatic update does not silently change behavior.
Web search and retrieval tools
Search tools must contact a search or content provider. The query may include text extracted from your prompt or document. Turn search off for confidential material, or send only a separately rewritten query that contains no identifying details. A local model cannot make a remote search private.
Cloud fallback and mixed conversations
Some applications expose local and cloud models in the same chat window. A fallback can activate when the local model is unavailable, overloaded or unable to use a requested feature. Treat each model switch as a new disclosure decision; do not assume the privacy mode persists after changing models.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Metadata and logs
Metadata such as application version, request counts, crash reports or IP information can reveal use patterns without containing the prompt itself. Review diagnostic settings and the policy governing them. On a self-hosted server, inspect web-server, proxy, authentication and application logs, not just the model provider’s policy.

Backups and shared computers
A locally saved conversation can be copied by cloud backup, disk imaging, file synchronization, removable media or another administrator account. Encrypt backups, restrict their retention and delete sensitive exports from temporary folders and recycle bins. If several people use the computer, assume local files are accessible unless permissions and encryption say otherwise.
Privacy is only half of the decision
A private prompt can still produce an unsafe answer. The policies above do not establish comparative accuracy, reasoning ability, medical or legal reliability, or suitability for a high-stakes decision. Smaller local models may be useful for drafting, summarizing or brainstorming while still missing context, hallucinating sources or giving outdated advice.
- For health, legal, financial, employment or safety decisions, verify important claims with an appropriate authoritative source or qualified professional.
- Ask the model to show uncertainty and identify assumptions, then independently check names, dates, calculations and citations.
- Do not treat a confident tone, an offline badge or a citation-like sentence as evidence that the answer is correct.
- Keep the minimum necessary detail in the prompt; a model often does not need the person’s identity to explain a general concept.
How to choose a workflow
Choose device-only inference when
- The prompt contains information you do not want sent to any service.
- You can accept the selected model’s capabilities and can operate without web search or cloud-only tools.
- You control the computer, its accounts, storage and backups.
Choose a hybrid workflow when
- You need a stronger hosted model or current web information for some tasks.
- You can separate low-risk questions from sensitive ones and confirm the endpoint before each conversation.
- You understand which data is sent to the remote service and what that service retains.
Use a hosted service only after checking its terms
If a task must use an online model, review retention, training use, staff access, account security and deletion controls before submitting sensitive content. Where possible, redact identifiers and use an organization-approved account rather than a personal one.
A practical pre-send checklist
- Downloaded local model selected, with no cloud label or provider endpoint.
- Web search, plug-ins, cloud fallback and remote document tools disabled or explicitly accepted.
- Current privacy policy reviewed for content, history, diagnostics and metadata.
- Chat and attachment storage located; permissions, encryption and backups checked.
- Model and application downloads obtained from trusted sources.
- Question minimized and identifying details removed.
- Answer will be verified independently if the consequence of an error is significant.
The useful promise of a local AI chatbot is specific: local inference can keep the content of a conversation on your device. The responsible way to rely on that promise is to verify the endpoint and features for each chat, account for metadata and copies, and judge the answer separately from where it was computed.
