These 12 free tools let you format JSON, convert YAML, inspect JWTs, test regular expressions and calculate hashes in a browser tab. Their publishers say the processing happens locally, so your input is not sent to a tool server. That is useful for development data, but it is not an absolute privacy guarantee: a page can still include analytics, third-party scripts or browser extensions that observe activity.

Use the comparison below to choose a tool, then apply the privacy checklist before pasting credentials, private keys or live bearer tokens. A local JWT decode is inspection only; it does not prove that a token is authentic.

What “browser-only” and “no upload” actually mean

A browser-only utility performs its main computation in JavaScript or WebAssembly loaded into your tab instead of sending the text to a remote API. A no-upload statement means the vendor says your input is not submitted to its server. Those are useful signals, but they are vendor claims rather than independent security certifications.

None of the cited product descriptions establish an independent audit, penetration test or network-capture verification. For sensitive work, review the site’s current privacy policy and watch the browser’s Network panel while testing with harmless sample data. Also consider extensions, managed-browser monitoring, clipboard history and screenshots: local processing does not prevent those from seeing what you paste.

JSON formatting, validation and conversion

BytePane JSON Formatter

Use this when malformed or deeply nested JSON is hard to read. BytePane says formatting and inspection happen client-side and that tool input is not uploaded. It is suited to making indentation, arrays and objects legible before you investigate a syntax error.

DevPocket JSON Formatter

DevPocket’s formatter updates as you type and is described as 100% client-side with no upload step. That live feedback is useful for incrementally editing a configuration file. DevPocket also describes service-worker caching after the first visit, so the toolbox may open without a network connection once its assets have been cached; test that behavior on your own device before depending on it.

GenKitLab JSON formatter/validator

GenKitLab combines formatting with validation, diffing and conversion. Its description says the tools run in the browser with no sign-up, upload or storage. Choose it when you need to compare two JSON documents or distinguish a purely cosmetic formatting issue from invalid syntax.

BytePane YAML/JSON Converter

This converter handles the common YAML-to-JSON and JSON-to-YAML workflow in BytePane’s local-tool collection. YAML has features such as comments, anchors and scalar typing that do not map perfectly to JSON; inspect the resulting structure rather than assuming a round trip will preserve every presentation detail.

DevPocket YAML-to-JSON Converter

DevPocket provides a second local YAML conversion option. Its service-worker caching claim applies to the toolbox after the first visit, while the no-upload description covers the conversion itself. For a deployment file, validate the output with the system that will consume it because a syntactically valid conversion can still have the wrong data type or required key.

A safe JSON/YAML workflow

  1. Open the chosen formatter or converter and first test it with non-sensitive sample data.
  2. Paste the document into the input pane, then read the formatted output rather than copying blindly.
  3. For JSON, look for an explicit validation error and note the line or character position.
  4. For YAML conversion, check strings, numbers, booleans, nulls, lists and indentation in the generated JSON.
  5. Copy only the corrected result, clear both panes and close the tab when finished.

JWT decoding is not signature verification

DevPocket JWT Decoder

DevPocket’s decoder lets you inspect a token locally. A JSON Web Token normally contains an encoded header and payload separated by periods; decoding reveals those values without proving who created the token.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Acento JWT Decoder

Acento likewise decodes headers, payloads and claims client-side. It is useful for checking fields such as an issuer, audience, subject or expiration while troubleshooting an authentication flow. The description establishes client-side decoding, but it does not make a separate no-upload promise, so apply the same network and privacy checks.

How to inspect a token safely

  1. Copy a non-production example when possible. Treat a live bearer token as a credential even if it is short-lived.
  2. Paste the compact token into the decoder and inspect the header and payload sections.
  3. Check the algorithm, issuer, audience, subject and expiration against the service’s documented expectations.
  4. Remember that payload data is readable by anyone who obtains the token; JWT encoding is not encryption.
  5. When authenticity matters, use a verification implementation with the expected algorithm and trusted key. A decoder alone cannot detect a forged payload.

GenKitLab explicitly distinguishes decoding from verifying. Do not report “the token is valid” merely because a decoder can parse it or because its dates look plausible.

Testing regular expressions locally

ComfyToolkit Regex Tester

ComfyToolkit provides live matching and says there is no upload step, server round-trip or input log. That makes it a practical scratchpad for checking a pattern against sample text before placing it in code.

Acento Regex Tester

Acento tests JavaScript regular expressions with live highlighting and capture-group inspection. Use it when you need to see exactly which groups are populated, not just whether a match exists. JavaScript flavor matters: a pattern accepted by another engine may differ in escaping, lookbehind support, flags or Unicode behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regex test procedure

  1. Enter the pattern and select only the flags your target language supports.
  2. Use representative samples: valid values, near misses, empty strings, line breaks and unexpected Unicode.
  3. Inspect the highlighted span and every capture group.
  4. Copy the pattern into the application’s own test suite; the web tester is not a substitute for integration tests.
  5. Check performance with long or adversarial input before deploying a pattern on untrusted data, because a locally successful match can still cause excessive backtracking elsewhere.

Hash generators: choose a digest, not an encoding

DevPocket Hash Generator

DevPocket lists SHA-256, MD5, SHA-512 and HMAC generation in the browser. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are modern general-purpose digest choices; MD5 remains useful for legacy checksums but should not be selected for collision-resistant security. HMAC requires a secret key as well as the message, so protect both inputs.

ComfyToolkit Hash tool

ComfyToolkit offers local hash calculation under its no-upload model. Use it to reproduce a known digest or compare a downloaded artifact, while confirming that the displayed encoding (usually hexadecimal) matches the value you were given.

ToolDock Hash Generator

ToolDock says its generator uses standard browser APIs, runs client-side and sends no data to a server. This is another option for digest checks when you want a browser-native implementation.

Hashing versus encoding and decoding

Hashing is intended to be one-way: the same input should produce the same digest, but the digest is not a reversible representation of the original. Encoding, such as Base64, is reversible and provides no confidentiality. Decoding reverses an encoding; it does not authenticate the data. Select a hash tool for integrity comparisons, an encoder for transport formatting and a cryptographic verification process for authenticity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hashing workflow

  1. Identify the exact bytes to hash, including line endings and character encoding.
  2. Select the algorithm required by the publisher or protocol.
  3. Enter the text or other supported input and generate the digest locally.
  4. Compare the result character-for-character, preserving leading zeroes.
  5. For a security design, use a protocol-appropriate password KDF or keyed MAC rather than treating a plain fast hash as password protection.

The cited descriptions do not establish file-upload support for every hash tool. If you need to hash a file, confirm that the specific page offers a file picker and explains that the file is processed locally; otherwise compute the digest with a trusted local utility.

Picking the right tool for your risk

  • Quick JSON readability: BytePane JSON Formatter or DevPocket JSON Formatter.
  • JSON validation, diffing or conversion in one place: GenKitLab.
  • YAML to JSON: either BytePane’s converter or DevPocket’s converter; verify semantic types afterward.
  • JWT claim inspection: DevPocket JWT Decoder or Acento JWT Decoder, never as a substitute for verification.
  • JavaScript regex and capture groups: Acento Regex Tester.
  • Live matching with an explicit no-round-trip statement: ComfyToolkit Regex Tester.
  • SHA-256, SHA-512, MD5 or HMAC: DevPocket Hash Generator, subject to the algorithm caveats above.
  • Simple local hash calculation: ComfyToolkit Hash tool or ToolDock Hash Generator.

Privacy checks before using real data

  1. Read the current privacy statement and confirm that its wording still matches the tool’s page.
  2. Open developer tools, select the Network panel, and repeat a harmless test. Look for requests containing input text or unexpected third-party endpoints.
  3. Disable extensions that inspect pages or clipboard contents, or use a clean browser profile.
  4. Do not rely on offline mode unless you have already loaded the page once and verified that it works without a network connection. Only DevPocket’s description makes a service-worker caching claim among these tools.
  5. Afterward, clear inputs, remove copied secrets from the clipboard and close the browser tab.

These steps reduce exposure but cannot turn a public web page into a formally audited confidential-computing environment. For regulated or highly sensitive material, keep the operation entirely on a controlled local system.
