Private DNS and Android’s ad privacy settings solve different problems. Private DNS protects DNS questions and answers while they travel to a resolver; it is not, by itself, an ad blocker, VPN, or universal tracker blocker. Android’s ad privacy controls govern ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement. Advertising ID is a separate identifier setting. You can use these controls together, but none promises that every advertisement or tracking method will disappear.
The short answer
A DNS lookup converts a hostname such as example.com into an IP address. Android’s Private DNS setting protects that lookup’s DNS questions and answers in transit, using the system’s DNS-over-TLS support. It does not inspect or remove the web pages, app requests, cookies, or advertising content that arrive after the lookup.
Ad privacy settings operate at a different layer. They let you manage specific signals Android can use for advertising: topics inferred from apps you use, suggestions supplied by apps, and limited data used for ad measurement. Advertising ID controls affect a resettable or deletable advertising identifier supplied by Google Play services.

What Private DNS actually protects
DNS is the address-lookup step
Before an app can normally connect to a hostname, a resolver answers a DNS question: which IP address belongs to that name? Private DNS concerns the communication carrying that question and the resolver’s answer. Android documents this as DNS-over-TLS support in its system Private DNS APIs, which encrypts the DNS exchange in transit.

That protection can reduce exposure of the names being resolved to parties observing the network between the phone and the resolver. It does not make the destination connection anonymous, and it does not alter the content returned by the destination. Once an app has an address, its subsequent HTTPS, HTTP, telemetry, image, video, or advertising requests are separate traffic.
The three Android choices
Google’s general Android instructions present three Private DNS choices:
- Off: Private DNS is disabled.
- Automatic: Android uses its automatic Private DNS behavior.
- Private DNS provider hostname: You enter a resolver hostname.
The exact labels and location can differ by phone maker and Android build. The documented general route is Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS. If that path is not visible, search Settings for Private DNS. A provider hostname is a DNS resolver choice, not a license to describe the setting as a universal content filter; the Android setting itself is about securing DNS questions and answers.

Why Private DNS does not automatically block advertisements
Google’s boundary is explicit: “Private DNS helps secure only DNS questions and answers. It can’t protect anything else.” An advertisement can be delivered from the same hostname as the app or page, through an encrypted connection that Private DNS does not inspect, or through an app’s own delivery logic. Consequently, turning on Private DNS may leave the visible ad unchanged.
Do not treat a successful Private DNS configuration as proof that advertising, analytics, cookies, fingerprinting, or in-app tracking has stopped. It addresses the resolver exchange only. A resolver service could have policies beyond transport protection, but no particular filtering service is established here, so the Android setting should not be presented as an ad-blocking feature.
App and browser behavior
Android developer guidance says apps targeting Android 9 should honor the platform’s Private DNS behavior. That is guidance for compatible apps, not evidence that every app, browser, or device always sends DNS through the same system path. Apps can implement resolver behavior of their own. If privacy depends on a particular app honoring the system resolver, check that app’s documentation rather than assuming the setting covers every request.

What Android’s ad privacy page controls
Google documents the ad controls under Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy. Wording and placement can vary by device, so use Settings search for Ads privacy if the route differs. The page exposes three named mechanisms.

Ad topics
Android can derive topics of interest from the apps used on the device and make those topics available to apps for ad personalization. Android says it will share up to three topics at a time with an app. It also says stored ad topics are deleted after four weeks.
You can remove individual topics or turn the feature off. Removing a topic changes the stored signal; it does not guarantee that an advertisement about that subject will never appear. An app can have other contextual or first-party reasons to show a similar ad, and the ad controls page does not promise an ad-free result.
App-suggested ads
Apps may recommend and store suggestions that Android can use in advertising. From Ads privacy, you can block a particular app from suggesting ads. Android then deletes that app’s associated suggestion data.
This action is narrower than blocking the app’s advertising altogether. Google notes that you may still see ads related to the app after its suggestions are blocked. The setting removes the supported suggestion mechanism; it does not rewrite the app’s own advertising policy or every signal an ad system may receive.
Ad measurement
Ad measurement lets apps share limited information used to assess advertising performance. Google gives the time of day an ad was shown as an example of the type of data involved. Turning the feature off prevents this supported measurement function from operating through the setting.

Ad measurement is not described as a network filter. Disabling it does not remove ad requests from an app, suppress an ad slot, or stop unrelated analytics that an app handles under its own policy.
Advertising ID is a separate control
Advertising ID is supplied by Google Play services and is described by Google Play Console Help as “a unique, user-resettable, and user-deletable ID for advertising.” It is a separate control surface from both Private DNS and the three Ads privacy mechanisms.
Resetting the ID gives advertising systems a new identifier. Deleting it is stronger for that identifier: Google states that access attempts receive a string of zeros after deletion. Neither operation establishes that every form of personalization or tracking has ceased. Apps may maintain their own account identifiers, device signals, or in-app privacy choices, and an app’s policy can determine what it does when the identifier is unavailable.

Because Android menu layouts differ, the exact Advertising ID control may be shown in a Google or Privacy settings area rather than beside Private DNS. Search Settings for Advertising ID if you need to locate it. Treat the result as an identifier change, not as a promise to remove all advertisements.

Which setting should you change?
If your concern is DNS visibility on a network
Use Private DNS. Open the documented Private DNS page, choose the mode that fits your network, and understand that the protection applies to DNS questions and answers. This is the relevant control when your question is whether hostname lookups are protected while traveling to a resolver.
If your concern is interest-based ad personalization
Open Ads privacy and review Ad topics. Remove topics you do not want retained or turn the feature off. The result is narrower than “no ads”: the supported topic signal changes, while contextual and app-controlled advertising can remain.

If one app’s recommendations are the issue
Use App-suggested ads and block that app’s suggestions. Android removes the associated suggestion data for that app, but the app can still be related to advertisements shown through other mechanisms.
If you want to stop Android’s supported measurement sharing
Turn off Ad measurement. This addresses the measurement mechanism described by Android, not all analytics or every network request made by an app.
If you want a fresh or absent advertising identifier
Reset Advertising ID when you want a new value, or delete it when you want access attempts to receive zeros. Review the app’s own privacy controls as well, because identifier deletion does not control independently maintained account or device signals.
Using the controls together
These settings are complementary rather than interchangeable. A person can protect DNS exchanges with Private DNS while separately removing ad topics, blocking app suggestions, disabling ad measurement, and deleting Advertising ID. The combination reduces the specific signals covered by each control, but it does not create a single “block all ads and tracking” switch.
Keep the boundaries visible when evaluating a result. If an ad remains after changing Ads privacy, that is consistent with Google’s stated limitations. If a hostname is resolved securely but an app still sends telemetry afterward, that is also consistent with Private DNS’s DNS-only scope. If deleting Advertising ID does not change an app’s recommendations, the app may be using its own account or contextual data.

“Private DNS is the same as a VPN.”
It is not. Private DNS protects the DNS exchange; a VPN is a separate network-routing technology. The Android documentation does not describe Private DNS as protecting all traffic, changing the source IP for every connection, or tunneling application data.

“Removing an ad topic removes ads about that topic.”
It does not. Android’s stated behavior is removal of the stored topic signal, while related ads may still be shown.
“Blocking an app’s ad suggestions blocks that app’s ads.”
It does not guarantee that outcome. The associated suggestion data is deleted, yet Google says ads related to the app may still appear.
“Deleting Advertising ID makes the phone untrackable.”
Deletion affects that identifier only. Apps can have separate settings and identifiers, so the result should be described as an Advertising ID change rather than complete tracking prevention.
“Every Android app must use Private DNS.”
Android’s developer guidance says apps targeting Android 9 should honor Private DNS, but app-specific resolver implementations exist. Coverage across every app, browser, and device is not guaranteed by the setting alone.
A practical review checklist
- Define the problem first: DNS exposure, ad personalization, app suggestions, measurement, or an advertising identifier.
- Open the matching Android page instead of changing an unrelated setting.
- Record the original state if you may need to restore it, especially before entering a provider hostname.
- After changing a control, evaluate only the behavior that control covers. Persistent ads do not disprove a DNS change, and a changed ad profile does not prove DNS privacy.
- Inspect the app’s own privacy and advertising options when Android’s controls do not explain its behavior.
- Use Android’s Settings search when a manufacturer’s menu labels differ from Google’s general paths.
FAQ
Does Private DNS block ads on Android?
No. It protects DNS questions and answers in transit. It is not itself an ad blocker.
What does Private DNS block?
It does not “block” web or in-app content by default. Its function is to secure DNS exchanges; the Android setting does not promise to block pages, ads, trackers, or application traffic.
How do I turn off ad topics?
Go to Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy, then turn off Ad topics or remove individual topics. If your phone uses different labels, search Settings for Ads privacy.
How many ad topics can Android share with an app?
Android says it can share up to three topics at a time with an app. It also says ad topics are deleted after four weeks.
Does deleting Advertising ID stop personalized ads?
Not necessarily. Deletion makes Advertising ID access return zeros, but apps can use their own settings, identifiers, or other signals. It is one privacy control, not a complete personalization shutdown.
