Apple Private Cloud Compute (PCC) is the cloud inference system Apple Intelligence can use when a request needs more computing power or a larger model than an iPhone, iPad, or Mac can provide locally. Apple says PCC is designed to process the information needed for that request without retaining it afterward. It is not a general-purpose cloud storage service, and not every Apple Intelligence request uses it.

When does Apple Intelligence use Private Cloud Compute?

Apple Intelligence first assesses whether it can handle a request on the device. If the task needs greater computational capacity or a larger server-based model, it can send the data relevant to that task to PCC for inference. The intended role is to perform the requested AI computation, rather than store a user’s files or serve as a consumer cloud-storage product. Apple’s PCC overview and its Apple Intelligence explanation describe this device-to-cloud relationship.

In practical terms, local processing means the inference runs on the device; PCC means selected request data is processed on cloud infrastructure. Apple describes the cloud handoff as conditional on a request needing more capacity, not as a setting that sends every request to the cloud.

What privacy protections does Apple say PCC is designed to provide?

Apple defines five requirements for PCC. These are Apple’s stated technical design requirements and commitments; they should not be confused with independent verification of every privacy claim or AI service outcome.

Apple 2020 Mac Mini with Apple M1 Chip, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD Storage - Silver (Renewed)
  • Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
  • 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
  • 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
  • 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
  • 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
  • Stateless processing: personal data is used to fulfill the request and, Apple says, is not retained after the response, including through logging or debugging.
  • Enforceable guarantees: critical components are intended to be constrained and analyzable, so protections depend on technical properties rather than policy alone.
  • No privileged runtime access: the design is intended to prevent Apple operations staff from using privileged interfaces to bypass privacy requirements.
  • Non-targetability: an attacker should not be able to single out one person’s data for compromise without mounting a broader attack on PCC.
  • Verifiable transparency: security researchers should be able to inspect PCC software and compare it with the software running in production.

How does a device verify a PCC request?

In Apple’s original technical description, a device encrypts a request to validated PCC node keys. Before sending it, the device checks cryptographic attestation: evidence about the node’s identity and software measurements. It compares those measurements with a public transparency log. Apple presents this process as a way for the device to verify the software environment receiving the request, rather than relying only on an operational promise.

Apple’s June 2026 description of the Google Cloud deployment adds controls including an append-only hardware ledger and multiple independent roots of trust for components that could expose user data if compromised. These are details of Apple’s stated implementation; they do not by themselves establish that every possible risk or privacy claim has been independently validated. Apple’s technical overview explains the original design, while Apple’s June 2026 announcement describes the expansion.

Where does PCC run now?

PCC began with custom Apple silicon server hardware and a hardened operating system. As of June 8, 2026, Apple says it is expanding PCC to Google Cloud for some new Apple Intelligence workloads. The expanded implementation includes NVIDIA GPUs and confidential-computing technology, Intel CPUs with TDX, and Google’s Titan chip. Apple says the same five PCC requirements continue to apply and that it retains control over PCC software; devices trust only PCC software cryptographically approved by Apple. This means PCC should no longer be described as running exclusively on Apple silicon or solely in Apple-operated data centers.

What does the PCC SOC 3 report verify?

Apple publishes SOC 3 reports on a quarterly, rolling 12-month basis. Its page lists an April 2026 report whose examination period ended April 30, 2026. The stated scope is the PCC Provisioning System, including provisioning, ongoing verification, and protection of information within compute nodes. Apple explicitly says these examinations did not evaluate Apple Intelligence service performance or integrity. A SOC 3 report therefore should not be treated as proof of AI output quality or as an audit of every PCC privacy claim. See Apple’s PCC SOC 3 report.

What Apple means by “never stores it”

In Apple’s June 10, 2024 announcement, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said: “Private Cloud Compute uses your data only to fulfill your request, and never stores it, making sure it’s never accessible to anyone, including Apple.” This is Apple’s stated commitment about PCC’s handling of request data, not an independent finding about all possible threats or the quality of AI responses. Federighi’s statement appeared in Apple’s announcement.

What PCC is—and is not

  • It is: cloud inference for Apple Intelligence requests that need more computational capacity or a larger model than local processing can provide.
  • It is designed to be: a system with stateless processing, enforceable protections, no privileged runtime access, non-targetability, and verifiable transparency, as specified by Apple.
  • It is not: a general cloud drive, a separate retail service a user chooses independently, or the destination for every Apple Intelligence request.
  • It is not established by the SOC 3 scope: the performance or integrity of Apple Intelligence outputs, which Apple says the examination does not evaluate.
