There is no evidence-based single “most private” winner. The service that gives you the most control depends on which control you need: stopping model training, keeping chats out of history, deleting conversations, limiting retention, restricting human review, or applying workplace administration. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini expose different combinations of these settings, and a training opt-out is not the same as deletion or zero provider access.
This comparison uses the consumer controls and published exceptions documented by OpenAI, Anthropic and Google as inspected in October 2026. Account type, workspace policy, feature, feedback and geography can change the result.
What “control over your data” actually means
Privacy settings for an AI chatbot govern several separate data paths. Treating them as one “private” switch leads to incorrect assumptions.

- Model improvement: whether new conversations can be used to train or improve provider models.
- History: whether you can see the conversation in your account and return to it later.
- Deletion: when removing a chat from the interface also removes it from backend systems.
- Temporary or incognito use: a mode that avoids ordinary history, but may still have safety or legal retention.
- Human review: whether staff or contractors can inspect content for safety, quality, abuse investigations or feedback handling.
- Administration: controls available to an employer, school or other managed workspace that are not available on a personal account.
Compare all six axes for the exact account and settings you will use. A provider can offer a strong training opt-out while retaining chats for service operation or safety.
#1 Best Overall
At-a-glance comparison
| Service and scope | Model improvement or training | History, deletion and temporary use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT consumer | Turn off Improve the model for everyone; new conversations are then not used to train OpenAI models. | Ordinary chats can remain in history. Temporary Chats stay out of history and do not create or update memories; OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. | Turning training off does not delete existing chats. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces and the API are excluded from training by default, subject to workspace and account controls. |
| Claude consumer (Free, Pro, Max and supported Claude Code use) | Chats may be used for model improvement if you allow it, if content is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. | Deleting a chat removes it from history immediately and from backend storage within 30 days. Incognito avoids ordinary model-improvement use. | If improvement is enabled, relevant new or resumed chats may remain in de-identified training pipelines for up to five years. Policy-flagged content and feedback have separate retention rules. |
| Gemini Apps personal account | With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Temporary chats are not used to train models. | Keep Activity is on by default for adults. Saved activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default, with choices of 3 months, 36 months or indefinite. Keep-Activity-off and temporary chats remain with the account for 72 hours. | Some chats reviewed by humans can be retained for up to three years, and deleting activity does not remove chats already reviewed. Keep Activity off still permits processing needed to respond and protect users and the service. |
The retention periods above describe different data paths, so they are not a direct ranking. A 30-day safety copy, a five-year de-identified training record and a three-year reviewed-chat record are not equivalent kinds of storage.
ChatGPT: separate training controls from history and memory
Stopping model training
On a personal ChatGPT account, open Settings > Data Controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI’s stated effect is specific: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The setting applies to new conversations; it does not erase older chats.
Using Temporary Chats
Temporary Chats do not appear in ordinary history and do not create or update memories. They are not equivalent to immediate deletion: OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Use this mode when you need to avoid a persistent conversation list, but do not treat it as a guarantee that no copy exists.

Deleting existing conversations
Remove ordinary chats from the history interface when you no longer need them. Deleting a conversation and disabling model improvement solve different problems: deletion addresses the stored chat, while the training setting governs whether new conversations are used to improve models. Check both when reducing exposure.
Rank #2
Memory and personalization
Memory or personalization settings are separate from training controls. Turning off model improvement does not automatically clear information already saved as memory, and using a temporary chat prevents memory updates but is not a substitute for reviewing existing memory entries. Treat conversation history, saved memory and training permission as three separate settings.
Managed accounts
OpenAI states that content from Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces, plus the API Platform, is not used to train models by default. A managed workspace can still impose its own access, retention and administrator policies. If your account belongs to an organization, ask which policy controls exports, audit access and deletion before entering confidential material.
Claude: the clearest incognito option, with longer improvement retention
Model-improvement permission
Claude’s consumer plans—Free, Pro and Max, including supported Claude Code use—can use chats for model improvement when you permit it. Anthropic also identifies safety-flagged content and other explicit opt-ins as separate paths. Review the model-improvement choice in Privacy Settings rather than assuming a paid plan changes the default.
Incognito chats
Incognito is the strongest single-session control described for Claude. Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito does not erase every possible operational or safety record; Anthropic describes separate exceptions for policy enforcement, feedback and legal obligations.
Rank #3
Deletion timing
Deleting a Claude conversation removes it from the visible history immediately. Anthropic says the conversation is removed from backend storage within 30 days. That is a provider-stated deletion window, not proof that every derivative record disappears at the same instant.
Longer retention when improvement is enabled
If you allow model improvement, relevant new or resumed chats may be retained in de-identified training pipelines for up to five years. This is materially different from the 30-day backend-deletion window for a chat you delete. Inputs and outputs flagged for Usage Policy violations can be kept for up to two years, while associated trust-and-safety classification scores can be retained for up to seven years. These periods apply to their stated safety purposes, not to every conversation.
Gemini Apps: activity history, 72-hour holding periods and review exceptions
Keep Activity and model training
For a personal Gemini Apps account, Keep Activity is on by default for adults. Turning it off means future chats are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Temporary chats are also excluded from model training. Google’s control therefore combines an activity-history choice with a training rule, but it is not a promise that the service stops processing the chat.

When Keep Activity is enabled, saved activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default. You can change that schedule to 3 months, 36 months or indefinite retention. Choose the shortest period compatible with your need, and remember that an auto-delete schedule is not the same as immediate deletion after every session.
Temporary chats and Keep Activity off
Google says temporary chats, and chats created while Keep Activity is off, remain with the account for 72 hours. The stated purpose is service delivery and safety handling. That period is shorter than ordinary activity retention, but it is still retention.
Human review and feedback
Some Gemini chats are reviewed by human reviewers and can be retained for up to three years. Google says deleting activity does not remove chats that have already been reviewed. Submitting feedback can also change how a conversation is handled, so do not use feedback as a private support channel for sensitive material.
What Keep Activity off does not do
Google’s Privacy Hub says: “Even if your Keep Activity setting is off, Google still uses your chats to respond to you and help protect Google, our users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers.” In practical terms, the setting limits model-training use and saved activity, not all processing, safety review or provider access.
Which service fits which privacy goal?
| Your priority | Most relevant documented control | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent new chats from training models | ChatGPT: turn off Improve the model for everyone. Claude: disable Model Improvement. Gemini: turn off Keep Activity, and avoid submitting feedback. | It does not delete existing history or eliminate safety, legal or service-processing records. |
| Avoid ordinary chat history | ChatGPT Temporary Chats, Claude Incognito, or Gemini temporary chats. | Each provider retains some temporary data for safety or operations; the periods differ. |
| Remove a conversation | Delete the chat in the service’s history interface. Claude states backend removal within 30 days. | Already reviewed, flagged, de-identified or feedback-related records may follow separate schedules. |
| Set an automatic retention limit | Gemini’s Keep Activity auto-delete options: 3, 18 or 36 months, or indefinite. | An automatic schedule does not prevent earlier human review or other safety processing. |
| Use organizational controls | Consider a managed ChatGPT workspace or API arrangement where content is excluded from training by default, then verify your organization’s policy. | Administrators may control access, retention, exports and auditing; “not used for training” is not “visible to nobody.” |
How to configure a chatbot before sharing sensitive information
- Identify the account. Confirm whether you are using a personal, work, school or API account. Managed-account rules can replace consumer defaults.
- Open privacy or data controls. In ChatGPT, inspect Settings > Data Controls. In Claude, review Privacy Settings and the Model Improvement choice. In Gemini Apps, open activity controls and check Keep Activity.
- Disable model-improvement use where appropriate. Do this before sending the message; changing the setting later is not a deletion command for an earlier chat.
- Choose a temporary or incognito mode for one-off work. Read the provider’s stated safety-retention period first: up to 30 days for ChatGPT Temporary Chats and 72 hours for Gemini temporary or Keep-Activity-off chats.
- Check history after the session. Verify whether the conversation appears in the account and delete it if it should not remain there.
- Review memory and personalization separately. In ChatGPT, inspect saved memories as well as chat history. A training opt-out does not clear memory.
- Do not submit sensitive feedback. Feedback can create a separate review or retention path, especially where the provider says reviewed or flagged material follows different rules.
- Document the policy for team use. For a workplace or school, record who can access chats, how long they are retained, whether exports are enabled and how deletion requests are handled.
Common privacy mistakes and how to correct them
“I turned off training, so the old chats are gone.”
Training permission and stored history are separate. Disable improvement for future conversations, then delete existing chats and review saved memory or activity.
Best Value
“Temporary means no copy exists.”
Temporary and incognito modes reduce persistence in the visible account but still allow provider-stated safety retention. ChatGPT can retain a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days, while Gemini holds temporary or Keep-Activity-off chats for 72 hours.
“Deletion removes every derivative record.”
Providers describe separate handling for human review, policy flags, feedback and de-identified training. Google says reviewed Gemini chats can remain for up to three years; Anthropic lists up to two years for policy-flagged inputs and outputs and up to seven years for related trust-and-safety scores.
“A paid plan automatically has consumer privacy settings.”
Claude’s Free, Pro and Max plans share the documented consumer model-improvement framework. Conversely, OpenAI’s default training exclusion for specified managed plans and the API depends on account type and organization controls, not simply on paying for an individual subscription.

This is a focused comparison of the current, publicly documented consumer controls for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini Apps, inspected in October 2026. It is not a complete ranking of every chatbot. Other services may offer different defaults, regional rules or enterprise contracts, but they are not included here because equivalent primary documentation was not verified for this comparison.
Policies and interface labels can change. Before using a service for regulated, confidential or personally identifying information, read the provider’s current privacy and data-control pages for your country and account type, and obtain an organizational agreement where required.
The practical verdict is therefore conditional: choose the service whose specific settings match your required control, verify retention exceptions, and configure those settings before sharing data. No single toggle establishes zero retention, zero human access or universal deletion.
