If prompts and documents must stay on your computer, use a downloaded model with a local-inference app such as Ollama or LM Studio, then verify that the selected model is local and disable optional cloud or web features. Apple Intelligence is a different, hybrid choice: many tasks run on-device, while some complex requests can be sent to Apple Private Cloud Compute.
What “private AI” means in practice
For this purpose, private AI means that the model processes your prompt on hardware you control instead of uploading the prompt to a conventional hosted chatbot. The strongest version of that requirement is a computer running a downloaded model with its network connection disabled while you work. A weaker version is an application that normally runs locally but can also contact a vendor’s cloud, search the web, check for updates, download models or send limited telemetry.
“Local” therefore describes where inference happens, not every network action performed by the application. An app can run a model on your computer and still connect to the internet for account functions, update checks, model discovery, diagnostics or optional online features. Before entering sensitive material, identify the exact model and feature being used, read the current privacy policy, and confirm whether the request can leave the device.

Which option fits a no-cloud requirement?
| Option | Where requests are processed | Useful distinction | Checks before using sensitive data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ollama with a downloaded local model | On your device for local use | Ollama says it cannot access local prompts and responses, but the software also offers cloud-hosted models | Choose a model stored and run locally; review metadata collection and other application network activity |
| LM Studio with a downloaded local model | On your device and usable offline | Its policy separates local models from optional cloud models and web search | Use a downloaded local model; avoid cloud and web features when you need local-only processing |
| Apple Intelligence | On-device for many tasks; Private Cloud Compute for some complex requests | A hybrid design with Apple’s stated non-retention protections and transparency logging | Check device, language, region and feature availability, and determine whether the task is sent to Private Cloud Compute |
For a strict “the prompt never leaves this computer” rule, the first two options can meet the requirement when configured for a downloaded local model and used offline. Apple Intelligence can reduce ordinary data exposure, but it is not an entirely offline local model because complex requests may go to Private Cloud Compute.

Ollama: local models with an optional cloud path
What Ollama says about local content
Ollama’s privacy policy states: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” That is Ollama’s own policy statement, not an independent audit. The same policy says Ollama collects limited device and usage metadata. It also explains that content sent to cloud-hosted models is processed transiently to provide that service.
The practical implication is that the model choice matters as much as the application name. A local model loaded by Ollama follows the local-use statement; selecting a cloud-hosted model changes the data path. Treat the model selector, connection status and any cloud toggle as part of your privacy decision rather than assuming every Ollama interaction is offline.
How to use Ollama for local-only work
- Install Ollama from its official distribution and review the current privacy policy at https://ollama.com/privacy.
- Download a model to your computer while you have an internet connection. Model downloads are a separate network activity from later inference.
- Start a chat using the downloaded model, and confirm in the application that the selected model is local rather than cloud-hosted.
- For highly sensitive material, disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet before entering the prompt. This prevents optional online functions from communicating during the session, although it does not replace checking the software’s behavior and storage settings.
- Keep documents and exported chats in storage you control. Local inference does not automatically encrypt files or protect them from other users and applications on the same computer.
What the policy does not promise
Ollama’s local-content statement does not mean that every byte handled by the application is never associated with telemetry, that cloud models have the same data path, or that third-party model publishers follow Ollama’s policy. Check the model source and the current application settings separately. If a workplace or regulated-data rule requires an independent audit or a contractual guarantee, a consumer privacy policy alone does not establish compliance.
LM Studio: downloaded models and offline operation
Local and optional online features are separated
LM Studio says in its privacy policy: “If you download and run models locally, none of your messages, chat histories, and documents are ever transmitted from your system – everything is saved locally on your device.” The policy also describes update checks and model searches or downloads, and it separately covers optional cloud-model and web-search features. Its statement applies to downloaded local operation; do not extend it to optional cloud services or to every third-party model distributor.
Configure an offline session
- Install LM Studio and read its current policy at https://lmstudio.ai/privacy.
- Use the model catalog while online to download the model files you need. Searching for models and downloading them require internet access.
- Load the downloaded model in the local chat interface. Confirm that the session identifies the local model, not a cloud provider.
- Turn off optional web search and cloud-model functions. If the material is especially sensitive, disconnect the computer from the network for the actual conversation.
- Back up or delete local chat histories and documents according to your own retention policy. LM Studio’s local processing does not decide how long you keep files on your device.
Understanding transient cloud requests
LM Studio’s policy says optional cloud requests are processed transiently and are not retained after the request completes. That protection applies to the optional cloud path described by LM Studio; it is not the same as keeping a request on your own computer. If your requirement is zero transmission, do not use the cloud model or web-search features, even if the provider says the request is not retained.

Apple Intelligence: privacy-oriented, but hybrid
On-device processing for many tasks
Apple’s support guide says: “In many cases, Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device so that a task can be completed without data leaving your device.” This can keep routine requests on the device when the relevant feature and language are supported.
When Private Cloud Compute is involved
Apple also explains that more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute (PCC). According to Apple, data processed there is used to fulfill the request and is not stored or made accessible to Apple. That is a vendor-provided privacy design, not evidence that the entire Apple Intelligence service is offline. A user who requires an absolute no-network workflow must treat any possible PCC handoff as disqualifying and use a local model instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Metadata and transparency logging
Apple’s legal privacy documentation says it may collect limited, non-content information about a PCC request, including approximate request and response size, features used and processing time. Apple says this information does not include the request content or returned result and is not identifiable or linked to an Apple Account. The documentation also describes transparency logging so you can inspect requests sent off-device. Logging helps you understand the data flow, but it does not turn a PCC request into an on-device request.
Availability checks
Apple Intelligence availability depends on the device, operating-system release, supported language, region and the particular feature. Check Apple’s current requirements for your hardware and location before relying on it for a privacy-sensitive workflow. Do not infer that every Apple device, language or task uses the same processing route.
Hardware and model size: what you actually need
Local inference is limited by the computer’s memory, processor, graphics capability, storage and the model’s size. Larger models generally require more memory and may respond more slowly on modest hardware; smaller models are easier to run locally but may be less capable for difficult reasoning, long documents or specialized work. The right trade-off depends on the task, not on a universal minimum specification.

Apple’s 2025 technical report describes an approximately 3-billion-parameter on-device Apple Foundation Model optimized for Apple silicon. This is a description of one compact model, not a minimum requirement for all local AI software and not a comparative performance benchmark. Other local models can have very different memory and processing demands.

A decision framework for choosing private AI
Choose a local model when zero transmission is mandatory
Use Ollama or LM Studio with a downloaded model, disable cloud and web features, and work offline while handling the material. This is the clearest path when a policy says prompts, source documents and generated answers must not leave the device.
Choose Apple Intelligence when a managed hybrid is acceptable
Apple Intelligence can keep many tasks on-device and provides Apple’s stated PCC protections for harder requests. It suits people who value system integration and accept that some requests may be processed off-device under Apple’s PCC design.
Ask these questions before selecting a tool
- Can the exact task be completed with a downloaded local model?
- Is the selected model local, or can the application silently route it to a hosted model?
- Are web search, plugins, synchronization or document connectors enabled?
- Does the application perform update checks or collect limited device and usage metadata?
- Can you disconnect the computer during the sensitive part of the workflow?
- Does your organization require an audit, contract or specific retention guarantee that a consumer policy does not provide?
Privacy checklist before entering a confidential prompt
- Identify the application, model name and processing mode shown in the interface.
- Read the provider’s current privacy policy, because policy language and features can change.
- Disable cloud models, web search, remote tools and automatic sharing that are not essential.
- Download models and updates before the sensitive session, then disconnect the network if your policy requires no transmission.
- Remove unnecessary names, account numbers and document metadata from the prompt.
- Control local access with separate user accounts, disk encryption and operating-system permissions.
- Decide how chat histories, uploaded documents and generated files should be retained or deleted.
- Test the workflow with non-sensitive text and inspect any available logs before using real confidential material.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the app name guarantees offline processing
Both Ollama and LM Studio support local models but also describe online capabilities. Always verify the selected model and feature. A local-capable application is not automatically a local-only application.

Forgetting that model downloads are network activity
Downloading a model, searching a catalog and checking for updates require connectivity. Perform those actions before a controlled offline session, and treat downloaded files as another part of your data and supply-chain review.
Calling Apple Intelligence “fully offline”
Apple documents on-device processing for many tasks and PCC processing for some complex requests. Describe it as hybrid. Use the transparency log and current Apple documentation to understand when a request leaves the device.
Confusing non-retention with no transmission
A provider may say that cloud content is processed transiently and then discarded. That can reduce storage exposure, but the content still crossed the network. If transmission itself is forbidden, only a genuinely local workflow meets the requirement.
Treating policy language as an independent guarantee
Ollama, LM Studio and Apple describe their own systems and commitments. Policies can change and may not cover third-party models, operating-system logs, backups or other software on the computer. For legal, medical or regulated data, obtain the assurance required by your organization instead of relying on a consumer feature description.

The available primary documentation does not provide an independent, current head-to-head comparison of Ollama, LM Studio and Apple Intelligence for privacy outcomes, accuracy, energy use or total cost. It also does not establish a universal hardware compatibility matrix or a benchmark showing which local model is fastest or most capable. Choose based on your task, hardware and data-flow requirement rather than an invented ranking.
For the same reason, do not assume that a local model is cheaper, more accurate or more energy-efficient than a hosted service in every situation. Local operation shifts responsibility for hardware, storage, updates, security and model selection to you. Its central benefit is control over where inference occurs.
