The best private AI agent depends on which layer and workflow you need. OpenClaw is a messaging-first gateway that can connect chat apps to agents and local model backends. Hermes Agent provides a guided local-model setup for an actual agent. Open WebUI is a self-hosted interface that can add terminal and computer-agent execution, while LocalAI combines a self-hosted inference service with a basic model-prompt-tool agent. These projects are complementary rather than interchangeable.
“Self-hosted” does not automatically mean “fully local.” You can run an interface on your own server while sending prompts to a cloud API. Before choosing, identify where inference occurs, where files and history are stored, which tools can act on your machine, and who is responsible for securing the deployment.

An AI agent is software that uses a model to plan and call tools, then continues through multiple steps. Depending on the product, those tools might read files, run shell commands, browse, send messages, or trigger scheduled jobs. A model server only serves model responses; a chat interface provides access to a model; an agent runtime coordinates actions. Some projects combine two or all three roles.
Privacy has several separate locations:
- Inference: where model computation happens. A local runtime keeps prompts on your device or server; a hosted API sends them to an external provider.
- Storage: where chat history, uploaded documents, credentials, logs, and tool results are saved.
- Execution: where shell, filesystem, browser, messaging, or scheduled actions run.
- Network path: which integrations and model endpoints can receive data.
Open WebUI’s security documentation explains that its data pipeline remains in the operator’s infrastructure by default, but an external model provider can be configured. The organization running the deployment remains responsible for environment security and regulatory obligations. Read the project documentation before treating any setup as private.

OpenClaw: a messaging-first private agent gateway
OpenClaw runs a Gateway process on a personal computer or server and bridges messaging channels to AI coding agents. Its documentation lists Discord, iMessage, Signal, Slack, Telegram, and WhatsApp, along with isolated agent routing, skills, and scheduled automation. This is the most natural fit if your main requirement is an assistant that is reachable through the channels you already use.
The Tool Desk

The local-model documentation names llama.cpp, LM Studio, and Ollama as backend choices and also describes compatible serving endpoints. Its managed llama.cpp flow checks host memory, supported GPU memory, and disk space before setup. Requirements vary with model weights, context size, runtime, and other work on the host. The smallest curated recipe has an 8 GiB host-memory floor, but that floor is not a guarantee of speed or successful agent execution.
A short conversational prompt can work while a full agent turn fails because the latter needs context, tool-call output, runtime overhead, and possibly several model passes. OpenClaw therefore recommends testing the actual tasks you intend to automate before making a model the default.
Safety and permission implications
OpenClaw’s documentation states: “Local models do not provide hosted providers’ safety filters.” Treat that as an operational warning, not as a reason to assume local models are unsafe by definition. Review every tool, account, channel, and scheduled job. Start with non-sensitive data and least-privilege credentials, then expand access only after representative tasks behave correctly.
Hermes Agent: a guided route to a local model
Hermes Agent documents a setup designed for people who want an agent and a local model without assembling every component manually. In settings or onboarding, select Local Models; the setup installs a hardware-specific llama.cpp build, verifies it, lets you choose a catalog model, and can make that model the default for new chats.

Documented hardware guidance
Hermes says a GPU with 8 GB or more of memory runs its small catalog models comfortably. It says 16 GB or more supports its 27–35B catalog models at high quality. These are vendor figures for the documented catalog and quality targets, not universal thresholds. Context length, quantization, operating-system overhead, concurrent applications, and tool output can change the result.

Manual local-server setups
The same guide covers Ollama, MLX, custom builds, and headless CLI machines. A manual setup is useful when the model server already exists on your host or when you need a runtime that the guided catalog does not provide. Verify the endpoint, model identifier, context limit, and tool-calling support before assigning it to an agent.
Open WebUI: interface, provider switchboard, and terminal execution
Open WebUI is a self-hosted platform that can run offline and connect to Ollama or OpenAI-compatible APIs. It is best understood as an interface and orchestration layer rather than a model runtime by itself. You can keep the interface and storage on your own infrastructure while choosing either a local endpoint or a cloud provider.
Open Terminal and computer-agent options
Open Terminal gives an agent terminal and filesystem access for multi-step work. The project also documents Open WebUI Computer as a real-machine agent harness with local files, terminal, tools, approvals, and plan mode. These capabilities make Open WebUI relevant for coding, file transformations, and repeatable desktop workflows, but they also increase the impact of a mistaken command or over-broad folder permission.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keeping the deployment local
For local inference, point Open WebUI at a model server running on the same machine or a controlled private network. If you configure an OpenAI-compatible cloud endpoint, prompts and tool results travel to that provider even though the web interface is self-hosted. Record every endpoint and integration in your deployment inventory.
LocalAI: a compact model-prompt-tool agent stack
LocalAI’s documentation describes an agent as three parts: an installed model, a system prompt, and a configured tool. Those parts run inside the LocalAI process, giving you a small self-hosted inference-and-agent layer rather than a separate chat front end plus a remote API.
Import and setup failures
The troubleshooting guidance distinguishes two common causes of an imported agent failing:
- Missing model: the agent references a model that is not installed or is named differently from the configured identifier.
- Missing action credentials: the tool exists, but the credentials required to perform its action are absent or invalid.
Check the model inventory first, then inspect the tool’s credential configuration. Do not solve a credential error by granting broader permissions than the action requires.

Other components that may belong in a private stack
Open WebUI’s alternatives page groups several projects by role. Ollama and llama.cpp are local model-running options. LM Studio and Jan are desktop local-AI applications. AnythingLLM focuses on document question answering, LibreChat is a self-hosted multi-provider chat interface, and Dify is a visual workflow builder. These can be useful components, but category membership does not prove that each is a complete autonomous personal agent. Check the current official documentation for tools, approvals, scheduling, and execution scope before relying on one for unattended work.
How to choose: a decision framework
Choose OpenClaw when messaging is the front door
Select OpenClaw if the assistant must be reachable from several chat channels, route conversations to isolated agents, or run scheduled jobs. Confirm that your chosen backend fits the host and that the messaging accounts can be secured independently.
Choose Hermes Agent when guided local setup matters
Hermes is a strong starting point when you want an agent-specific onboarding flow, a documented model catalog, and a supported path from hardware detection to a local default. Use the catalog’s memory guidance as a starting point, then test your real task.
Choose Open WebUI when you need an interface plus controlled tools
Open WebUI fits a household, lab, or small team that wants one self-hosted interface for local and cloud providers, with optional terminal or computer-agent execution. Decide explicitly whether each workspace may call an external provider.
Choose LocalAI when you want a compact inference service
LocalAI is appropriate when your priority is an operator-controlled inference endpoint with a straightforward model-prompt-tool agent definition. Expect to handle model installation, endpoint configuration, credentials, and operational monitoring yourself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hardware and workload planning
There is no universal “local AI agent computer.” Memory must hold model weights and runtime state while leaving capacity for the operating system, context, tool output, and other applications. Larger context windows and multi-step tasks can need substantially more headroom than a short chat.
| Guidance | What it actually establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| OpenClaw’s smallest curated recipe has an 8 GiB host-memory floor | A minimum stated for that recipe | That every model or agent task will fit, run quickly, or work without a compatible runtime |
| Hermes documents 8 GB GPU memory for small catalog models | Vendor guidance for comfortable operation of those small catalog models | A threshold for all models, quantizations, context lengths, or tools |
| Hermes documents 16 GB or more for its 27–35B catalog models at high quality | Vendor guidance tied to those catalog models and quality claims | A guarantee of high quality or speed for another agent or workload |
If you are shopping by capability rather than a named product, the phrase “GPU with 16GB VRAM for local AI” describes the relevant class for Hermes’ larger catalog guidance. A dedicated GPU is not automatically necessary for smaller models or CPU-oriented workloads; test the model and task you actually plan to run.

Step-by-step: evaluating a local agent before trusting it
- Write down the task. Specify the files, commands, messages, schedule, expected output, and whether unattended execution is acceptable.
- Map the stack. Identify the interface, agent runtime, model server, model endpoint, storage location, and every external integration.
- Start with a local model or an explicitly approved provider. Record the endpoint URL and model identifier so a later configuration change cannot silently move inference to the cloud.
- Use non-sensitive test data. Reproduce a representative multi-step task, not just a short question. Include realistic context length and tool output.
- Constrain permissions. Give the agent a dedicated account, a narrow working directory, and only the credentials needed for the test.
- Require approval for consequential actions. Review shell commands, file deletion, outbound messages, purchases, account changes, and publication before enabling automation.
- Measure practical behavior. Note completion rate, latency, context failures, incorrect tool arguments, recovery behavior, and resource use on the target host.
- Inspect logs and storage. Confirm what is retained, where it is stored, and whether any prompt, file, or tool result leaves the network.
- Promote gradually. Move from a sandbox to a limited production folder or channel, then add schedules and additional accounts only after repeated successful runs.
Security checklist for self-hosted agents
- Authentication: protect the interface, API, gateway, and administration endpoints with strong authentication; do not expose an unprotected service to the public internet.
- Network controls: restrict inbound access, separate management interfaces from public channels, and review outbound connections to model providers and integrations.
- Filesystem scope: mount or expose only the folders the task needs. Avoid giving an agent unrestricted access to home directories, secrets, or backups.
- Credential isolation: use dedicated tokens and accounts with narrow scopes. Rotate them when a test ends or a tool is no longer required.
- Approval and audit: retain enough logs to reconstruct actions while applying your organization’s retention and privacy rules.
- Updates and backups: keep the host, runtime, agent, integrations, and model-serving components patched; back up configurations without copying secrets into insecure locations.
- Safety defaults: remember that a local model may not provide the safety filters of a hosted provider. Add your own policy, validation, and approval layers.
- Compliance: the operator, not the project maintainer, is responsible for meeting applicable regulatory and organizational requirements.
Common failure modes and fixes
The interface is self-hosted, but prompts still leave the machine
Check the configured provider and endpoint. Replace the cloud-compatible URL with a local model server, or document the external provider as an intentional exception. Review uploaded-file and tool-result paths separately; they may use different integrations.
The model answers questions but cannot complete an agent task
Run the exact multi-step workflow with realistic context. Check tool-calling support, context limits, available memory, and runtime logs. Reduce context or choose a model known to support the required tool format before increasing permissions.
The local runtime is slow or runs out of memory
Close competing applications, reduce context, use a smaller or more heavily quantized model, or move the workload to hardware with more available memory. Treat OpenClaw’s 8 GiB floor and Hermes’ GPU figures as task-specific guidance, not performance guarantees.
An agent executes more than intended
Disable unattended schedules, revoke broad credentials, narrow filesystem access, and require approvals for destructive or outbound actions. Re-run the task in a disposable workspace before restoring automation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A LocalAI agent imports but fails immediately
Verify that the referenced model is installed under the exact configured name. Then check that each action has the credentials it requires. These are separate failure causes and need separate fixes.
What self-hosting changes operationally
Running an agent yourself removes dependence on a particular hosted interface, but it transfers work to you: installation, updates, model downloads, backups, authentication, monitoring, incident response, and data-governance decisions. An always-on server also needs power, network reliability, and a plan for recovery after crashes or disk failure.
For a personal experiment, a local desktop and a narrow folder may be enough. For a team or remote assistant, use a hardened host, private networking, individual accounts, auditable permissions, and documented provider exceptions. Do not equate “on my server” with “safe by default.”
Bottom line: which alternative should you start with?
Start with the workflow, not the model-size label. Choose OpenClaw for messaging and scheduled assistant work, Hermes Agent for a guided local-agent setup, Open WebUI for a self-hosted interface with optional terminal and computer-agent execution, and LocalAI for a compact model-prompt-tool service. In every case, verify the inference endpoint, storage path, tool permissions, and representative-task behavior before trusting sensitive data or unattended actions.
