The fastest way to reduce location tracking is to audit each app, then separately review device-wide location, precision, background access and stored history. On iPhone, use Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. On Android, use Settings > Location > App location permissions. Choose the least permissive option that still supports the feature you need, switch off precise location when an approximate area is enough, and delete historical data in Apple or Google account controls. Device-wide switches are broader and can break maps, lost-device tools and safety features, while emergency location transmission can still occur when you contact emergency services.
Understand the five separate location controls
“Location tracking” is not one switch. A phone can calculate a current position, let an app request it in the background, use a pinpoint coordinate instead of an area, feed nearby Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signals into the calculation, and save a travel history. Review each layer rather than assuming one setting controls all of them.
| Control | Scope | What changing it does | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-app permission | One app | Allows, asks for, or blocks that app’s location requests | The app may lose navigation, nearby results, automation or other location features |
| Precise versus approximate | One app’s location signal | Shares a pinpoint position or a broader area | Approximate mode can reduce accuracy for turn-by-turn navigation and delivery |
| Device-wide location switch | Most ordinary apps and services | Stops normal app access to the device location | Maps, find-device, local results, time-zone updates and some safety functions may stop or degrade |
| Scanning and signal sources | Device-level inputs | Controls whether Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scans help estimate location | Location estimates can become slower or less accurate |
| Account or device history | Stored records | Stops or deletes saved places and routes | Personalized suggestions and the ability to retrace visits may disappear |
iPhone: audit app access first
1. Open the Location Services list
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Leave Location Services on while auditing so you can inspect every app. Scroll through the complete list and open each app’s entry.
For most apps, select one of these choices:
- Never blocks location requests.
- Ask Next Time Or When I Share gives you a decision when the app next asks, useful for occasional searches.
- While Using the App permits location while the app is visible or performing an approved active task.
- Always permits background access. Keep it only for a clear use case, such as a trusted safety or automation function that must work when the screen is off.
Do not grant Always merely because an app requests it. If a feature fails after choosing While Using the App, test whether opening the app briefly is sufficient before restoring background access.

2. Turn off Precise Location where an area is enough
Inside an app’s Location Services entry, turn Precise Location off when the app needs only a neighborhood or general area. Weather, broad local recommendations and regional content usually do not require a pinpoint coordinate. Keep it on for turn-by-turn navigation, accurate pickup locations, geofenced automations and other functions where a few hundred metres can matter.

Precise Location is independent of permission. An app set to While Using the App can still receive a precise position; an app set to Never receives neither precise nor approximate location.
3. Use the global switch only when you accept broad disruption
At Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, turn Location Services off to stop ordinary app access across the phone. Apple states: “When Location Services are off, apps can’t use your location from Location Services in the foreground or background.” This is an effective emergency privacy measure, but it also limits Apple and third-party features that depend on location, including navigation, local results, some automations and parts of device-finding.
If you need maps or a lost-device function, keep the global switch on and tighten individual app permissions instead. That gives you a narrower change and makes it easier to identify which feature needs an exception.

4. Review iPhone System Services
Scroll to System Services at the bottom of the Location Services screen. Examine location-based suggestions, location-based Apple advertising, analytics and other services listed on your iPhone. Disable services whose benefit you do not want. Names and availability can vary by iOS release, so read each description before switching it off; some system functions may lose personalization or regional behavior.
Pay particular attention to Significant Locations or Significant Locations & Routes. This is a stored personalization history, not merely a permission for an app to obtain your current position. Turn it off if you do not want the device maintaining that record.
5. Delete saved significant places
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Tap System Services.
- Open Significant Locations or Significant Locations & Routes.
- Authenticate if asked, then tap Clear History and confirm.
Apple’s current iOS 26 guide says this deletion applies across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Clearing the history does not by itself change app permissions, so perform the per-app audit as a separate step.

Android: control permissions, accuracy and scanning separately
1. Check the device-wide Use location switch
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Review Use location. Turn it off to block ordinary app access when you want a broad stop.
Google Android Help says, “When Location is off, your device’s location isn’t shared with any apps.” The same documentation describes emergency and carrier exceptions, so do not treat the switch as a guarantee that no location can ever be transmitted. Turning it off can impair Maps, Find My Device, time-zone adjustment, local search and safety-related functions.
2. Set each app’s permission and timing
- From Settings > Location, tap App location permissions.
- Open each app and choose the least access that supports its job.
- Allow only while in use limits access to active use and approved foreground situations.
- Ask every time (or the equivalent allow when I share wording on some releases) makes occasional access an explicit decision.
- Don’t allow blocks the app.
- Allow all the time enables background access. Reserve it for a demonstrated need, such as continuous navigation or a safety workflow.
Android manufacturers can rename or rearrange these entries, but the Location and App location permissions screens remain the relevant places to look. If an app works only with background access, check whether its notification, battery or automation settings offer a less invasive alternative before granting Allow all the time.
3. Disable Use precise location per app
On Android 12 and later, an app’s permission screen includes Use precise location. Turn it off when an approximate area is sufficient. Keep it enabled for navigation, ride pickup, delivery handoff and geofencing that depends on a tight boundary. This control is independent of whether the app is allowed while in use or all the time.

4. Understand Android Location Accuracy
Go to Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy (the exact placement can vary by manufacturer). Location Accuracy controls whether additional wireless signals and sensors help calculate the device’s position. It is not the same as an app’s Use precise location permission.
Disabling Location Accuracy can reduce the speed and accuracy of estimates and can affect Maps or lost-device features, even when an app still has permission to request an approximate location. If your goal is to keep local weather working without sharing a pinpoint position, first turn off Use precise location for that app rather than disabling Location Accuracy for the entire device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. Reduce nearby-signal scanning
Under Settings > Location > Location Services, review Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. Turn either off if you do not want nearby network and beacon signals contributing to location estimates. Scanning can improve indoor or urban accuracy; disabling it may make location slower or less reliable. This setting changes signal collection, not the permission an app already has.

Stop stored location history, not just live access
Google Account Timeline
Android’s device Location switch and Google Account Timeline are different. Timeline is an account-level record of places and routes. In your Google Account, open Activity controls and review Timeline. Google says Timeline is off by default, can be turned off, and does not save places when device Location is off. Review the Timeline setting on every account and device you use, then delete existing Timeline data if you do not want previously saved visits retained.
Deleting Timeline does not revoke an app’s current permission. Conversely, denying an app permission does not necessarily remove history already stored in your account, so handle access and retention as two separate tasks.
Check changing data-sharing disclosures
For apps that handle location, review the Android app’s Play data-safety information and any Location sharing updates. These disclosures can change when an app changes how it shares or processes data. Use them as a prompt to revisit permissions rather than as a replacement for the permission screen itself.
Choose settings by the feature you need
| Your goal | iPhone choice | Android choice | What may change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional nearby information | Ask Next Time Or When I Share; Precise Location off | Ask every time or allow when I share; Use precise location off | Results may be broader and require a prompt |
| Navigation only while travelling | While Using the App; Precise Location on during navigation | Allow only while in use; Use precise location on during navigation | Turn-by-turn guidance may stop when the app is closed |
| No ordinary app location access | Turn Location Services off | Turn Use location off | Maps, local results and find-device features can be limited |
| Reduce saved travel records | Disable Significant Locations & Routes and use Clear History | Turn off Google Account Timeline and delete existing Timeline data | Personalized place and route history is unavailable |
| Reduce wireless signal inputs | Review relevant System Services | Turn off Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning | Indoor and urban location estimates may be less accurate |
What to do when an app stops working
- Map marker is too broad: restore Precise Location on iPhone or Use precise location on Android for that app, and check Android Location Accuracy.
- Navigation stops when the screen locks: verify whether the app genuinely requires Always or Allow all the time. If so, grant it only to that app and understand that it can request location in the background.
- Nearby results are missing: try While Using the App or Allow only while in use first, then temporarily enable precise location. A global switch is not necessary for a single app.
- Find-device tools cannot locate the phone: device-wide Location Services or Use location may be off, Location Accuracy may be disabled, or the phone may be offline. Restoring location improves the chance of a current position but cannot locate a powered-off or disconnected device.
- Old places still appear: clear Significant Locations on iPhone or delete Google Timeline data. Changing today’s permission does not erase historical records.
Emergency and carrier exceptions
Apple and Google documentation both describe emergency behavior that is separate from ordinary app access. When you call or text an emergency number, emergency services or a mobile carrier may transmit location to help respond, even if you disabled normal location access. This exception is intentional: privacy settings reduce routine app and account tracking, but they are not a way to prevent every emergency-location transmission.
Quick Recap
A practical privacy audit
- List apps that genuinely need location and the timing they require.
- Set every other iPhone app to Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share or While Using the App; on Android use Don’t allow, Ask every time or Allow only while in use.
- Turn off precise location for apps that need only an area.
- Reserve Always or Allow all the time for a documented background need.
- Review iPhone System Services or Android Location Accuracy, Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning.
- Disable and clear iPhone Significant Locations & Routes or turn off and delete Google Account Timeline.
- Test maps, navigation, automations and find-device functions, then make the smallest exception needed for any feature that failed.
