Before you paste a budget, brokerage question or financial document into an AI assistant, change the controls that govern model improvement, chat retention, memory, connected accounts and app permissions. In ChatGPT, the most important sequence is: turn off Improve the model for everyone, use Temporary Chat for sensitive sessions, review and delete financial memories, disconnect unused financial sources, revoke unnecessary app access, and never enter payment-card data. These controls are separate; changing one does not automatically change the others.
What to change first
Use this order before your first financial-research session. It minimizes new data collection, limits persistence, and removes access you do not need.
- Disable model improvement for new chats: Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone → Off.
- Start a Temporary Chat when the question involves sensitive finances or uploaded documents.
- Audit Memory, including any saved financial goals, obligations or account context, and delete items you no longer need.
- Disconnect unused bank accounts and credit-report sources from the financial area.
- Review connected apps; remove those you no longer use and lower approval levels where appropriate.
- Redact every prompt and file so it contains no card numbers, CVVs, PINs, tax IDs, names or full account identifiers.
- Verify every factual answer against current filings, statements, regulator information and a qualified professional before acting.
The exact labels and availability can vary by country, account type and workspace. Check the controls visible in your signed-in account rather than assuming that a setting described for a consumer account exists in a business workspace.
Turn off model improvement before entering new financial prompts
Consumer ChatGPT path
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Turn Improve the model for everyone off.
OpenAI says that, after you opt out, new conversations are not used to improve its models. The choice applies across devices for the signed-in account, so you do not have to repeat it on each phone or computer.

This is a forward-looking control, not an eraser. It does not delete conversations already in your history, remove saved memories, disconnect a linked account or prevent every form of operational access described in the provider’s policies. You must handle those areas separately.
Do not submit feedback on highly sensitive chats
Thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback can cause the associated conversation to be used for training even when model improvement is switched off. Avoid submitting feedback on a chat that contains confidential financial details. If feedback is essential, first start a new conversation containing a sanitized, generic example.
Use Temporary Chat for sensitive research sessions
Start a new chat and select Temporary Chat before asking about a portfolio, debt schedule, tax document or household finances. OpenAI documents that Temporary Chat does not appear in chat history and is not used to create memories.
Temporary Chat is a session-level minimization tool, not a deletion mechanism. It cannot remove information already present in ordinary chats, and it does not by itself disconnect bank or credit-report sources. Delete old conversations separately and revoke connections you no longer need.
When Temporary Chat is appropriate
- Comparing two anonymized investment allocations.
- Asking for a calculation based on rounded income and expense ranges.
- Summarizing a redacted statement whose account and identity fields have been removed.
- Testing a research prompt that you do not want retained as normal history or memory context.
When it is not enough
Do not treat Temporary Chat as permission to upload a complete statement, card image or tax return. The safest input is still the smallest, most heavily redacted dataset that can answer the question.

Review and delete financial memories
Memory is separate from both model-improvement controls and chat history. An assistant may retain useful context such as a savings goal, a mortgage obligation, a risk preference or a recurring deadline. That context can influence later answers, so inspect it before doing financial research.
Audit the financial-memory area
- Open the account’s Finances area.
- Review the dedicated financial-memory entries and any broader saved memories.
- Delete goals, obligations, account details and preferences that are no longer necessary.
- Repeat the review after a major change in your finances or when another person will use the account.
OpenAI’s financial documentation says users can delete financial memories from the Finances home page. Deleting a memory does not automatically remove the chat in which it was originally discussed; delete that conversation if it should no longer remain in history.

Use a deliberate memory rule
- Keep only durable context that materially improves future answers.
- Do not save full account numbers, authentication secrets or exact identity documents.
- Prefer a broad statement such as “I am planning for retirement in about 20 years” over an uploaded account statement.
- Delete a memory when its purpose ends, rather than accumulating a permanent financial profile.
Disconnect bank accounts and credit-report sources you do not need
Connected financial sources are separate from memory and chat retention. A bank connection and a credit-report connection are also separate from each other, so audit each one.
- Open the financial connections or Finances area in ChatGPT.
- List every connected bank account and credit-report source.
- Disconnect anything unrelated to the current research task, including old accounts, closed accounts and duplicate sources.
- Confirm the remaining connection scope and the last time it was used.
- Delete historical chats that contain data retrieved from a connection if those chats are no longer needed.
Disconnecting stops future connected access; it does not delete information already copied into a conversation. Removing a source also does not delete memories that were created from that source. Handle the connection, memory and chat record as three separate cleanup tasks.
Connect only for a defined purpose
If a task can be completed with manually entered totals or a redacted export, do not grant live account access. When a connection is necessary, use it for the shortest practical period and disconnect it when the analysis is complete.

Review connected-app permissions and action approvals
Apps can provide data or let ChatGPT take actions. Their permissions are independent of memory, retention and model-training choices.

- Open the account’s connected-app or integrations settings.
- Remove apps you no longer use or cannot identify.
- For every remaining app, read the requested data scope and action scope.
- Keep approval prompts enabled for actions that could send messages, change records, move money or disclose documents.
Changing an approval setting controls when ChatGPT asks before an action; it does not revoke access already granted. To end access, remove the app or revoke its authorization through the provider’s connection controls.
Use a least-privilege test
- Read-only research: grant only the account or document scope required to retrieve facts.
- Calculations: export redacted totals instead of granting access to a live ledger.
- Actions: require an approval step and independently inspect the destination, amount and recipient before confirming.
- Shared workspaces: ask the administrator which apps, logs and retention rules apply before connecting a personal source.
Never paste payment-card data
Do not enter a primary account number, CVV, PIN, magnetic-stripe data or other cardholder data in a prompt, uploaded file or custom GPT. OpenAI’s financial-data guidance explicitly says not to use ChatGPT inputs, including conversations, files and GPTs, to enter, upload or share cardholder data as defined by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard.
Use the provider’s designated secure payment page for billing instead. If a document contains card details, remove or mask them before upload. A redaction must cover the complete number; partially hiding a few digits is not a substitute for removing the sensitive field when it is unnecessary.
What to redact from financial material
- Card numbers, CVVs, PINs and one-time authentication codes.
- Bank and brokerage account numbers, routing numbers and login identifiers.
- Names, home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and tax IDs.
- QR codes, barcodes, document metadata and embedded images that reveal identity or account information.
- Transaction descriptions that disclose medical, political, legal or other sensitive personal details.
Minimize every prompt and uploaded file
Privacy settings reduce exposure, but the data you send still matters. OpenAI says authorized personnel or trusted service providers may access consumer content for limited operational reasons and advises users not to enter information they would not want reviewed or used.

Replace identifiers with labels
Use “Account A” and “Account B” rather than institution names and account numbers. Replace exact dates with month and year when the day is irrelevant. Round balances to a useful range, such as $20,000–$25,000, when a precise amount is not needed.
Give the minimum dataset that answers the question

Keep the original, authoritative document in your own controlled storage. Give the assistant only the excerpt needed for the question, and preserve the document’s title, issuer and date so you can verify the answer later.
Separate consumer, business and API assumptions
Do not assume that a business workspace has the same controls or data use as an individual account. OpenAI says content from API, ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise is not used for training by default unless the customer opts in. Individual-service content may be used to improve model performance depending on the user’s settings.
Workspace administrators may control retention, access, available apps and other settings. A company policy can therefore be stricter or more permissive than the defaults shown in a personal account. Confirm the actual plan, workspace policy, administrator access and geographic restrictions before sending confidential research.

Verify financial answers before making a decision
Privacy protection does not make an AI answer accurate or regulated advice. The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority warns: “A lot of what it’s trained on can be outdated, so it’s important to do your own research and double-check any facts or data it provides to make sure they’re accurate.” The FCA also says general-purpose tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot are not regulated by the FCA, and that AI cannot predict the future or sudden unexpected events.

Use a verification workflow
- Ask the assistant to state the date, jurisdiction and assumptions behind an answer.
- Open the cited primary filing, regulator page, prospectus, account statement or provider disclosure yourself.
- Check that rates, limits, tax rules and product terms are current for your country and account type.
- Recalculate important figures independently, especially compounding, fees, taxes and repayment schedules.
- Have a qualified financial, tax or legal professional review decisions with material consequences.
- Keep a record of the source links and dates used for the decision.
Ask for research assistance—such as extracting figures, explaining terminology or producing a comparison checklist—not a prediction of returns or a substitute for regulated advice.
Understand the disclosure and consent principle
The US Federal Trade Commission warns that companies risk violating the law when they retain or use consumer data for other purposes without clear, conspicuous notice and affirmative express consent, including when disclosures are buried in hyperlinks, legalese or fine print. Read the assistant’s privacy policy and data-control pages as the source of truth, and recheck them when the product, plan or workspace changes.
For your own workflow, document what you consented to: which account was connected, which apps can act, whether memory is enabled, what retention applies and whether model improvement is allowed. If the explanation is unclear, do not upload the financial material until the provider gives a clear answer.

A practical pre-session checklist
- Model improvement is off for the signed-in account.
- You selected Temporary Chat for a sensitive session.
- Unneeded financial memories were deleted.
- Unused bank and credit-report connections were disconnected.
- Unused apps were removed and action approvals are enabled.
- The prompt contains no cardholder data, credentials, tax IDs or unnecessary identifiers.
- Uploaded files are redacted and stripped of unnecessary metadata.
- The question includes the relevant country, date, account type and assumptions without exposing identity.
- You have a plan to verify every material number against a primary source.
What to do if you already shared sensitive information
- Stop sending additional details and do not submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on the sensitive chat.
- Delete the conversation from chat history.
- Review and delete any memory created from it, including financial memories.
- Disconnect the relevant bank, credit-report source or app and revoke authorization at the connected provider if available.
- If card data, credentials or authentication codes were exposed, contact the issuer or provider immediately, freeze or replace the affected instrument and change the compromised credentials.
- Check account activity and workspace logs where those records are available.
Deleting a chat or memory limits what remains in your account interface; it does not guarantee that every operational copy disappears immediately. Follow the provider’s deletion and incident-reporting instructions for the account type you use.
Bottom line for financial research with AI
Use AI as a controlled research aid, not as a vault or an investment adviser. Turn off model improvement, choose Temporary Chat for sensitive sessions, prune memory and connected sources, keep app permissions least-privilege, and never enter payment-card data. Then minimize every prompt and verify dates, figures and conclusions against authoritative sources before money, taxes or legal rights are involved.
