There is no universal “do not train” switch. Set the control separately in each service before you paste sensitive text or upload a file. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. In Gemini, turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity or use Temporary Chat. In Claude, disable the consumer option that permits chats and coding sessions to improve Claude. In signed-in consumer Copilot, open Privacy and turn off Training on conversation activity and, if applicable, Training on voice conversations.
These switches normally affect future conversations. They do not automatically erase old chats, memory entries, safety-review copies, short-term operational logs, or content you deliberately submit as feedback. Check the service’s retention and account terms as well as its training control.
What a training opt-out does—and does not do
“Training” means using conversation content or other submitted material to improve a model. A training opt-out tells the provider not to use eligible future content for that purpose. It is different from several other privacy controls:
- Chat history: whether a conversation remains visible in your account.
- Memory or personalization: whether the service carries facts or preferences into later chats.
- Deletion: removing a conversation or account data after it has been stored.
- Safety and abuse processing: automated or human review needed to protect the service, users and the public.
- Feedback: a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or other report that can include surrounding chat context and attachments.
Turning off memory does not turn off training, and turning off training does not necessarily turn off safety processing. Treat each control as a separate decision. If content is highly confidential, minimize what you disclose, remove identifying details and use an account or product whose contractual terms fit the sensitivity of the data.

Menu wording and placement can change between web, desktop and mobile releases. After a major update, open the privacy page again and confirm that the switch is still off.
ChatGPT: turn off “Improve the model for everyone”
Change the account-wide control
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings.
- Open Data Controls.
- Switch Improve the model for everyone off.
OpenAI states that new conversations still appear in chat history with this setting off, but they are not used to train ChatGPT. That makes this control different from a history-disabling mode: you retain the convenience of finding a chat later while declining ordinary training use.
Use Temporary Chat for a one-off sensitive conversation
Choose Temporary Chat when you do not want an ordinary conversation saved to your normal history or used for training. Use it before entering the sensitive material, not after. Temporary mode is not a promise that the provider cannot process the content at all; service operation, security and safety obligations can still require limited handling.

Turning off model improvement applies to eligible new conversations, including conversations in which you attach files, but it is not a universal deletion command. Remove an uploaded file or chat separately if you no longer want it stored in your account. Review memory and personalization independently if you do not want details carried into future responses.

OpenAI describes ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and API data as not used to improve models by default, unless an organization has a separate agreement or enables a sharing option. Consumer and organizational accounts therefore should not be treated as having identical defaults. An administrator’s policy or contract can supersede an individual user’s preference.
Gemini: disable Keep Activity or choose Temporary Chat
Turn off Keep Activity
- Open Gemini and go to Gemini Apps Activity.
- Find the Keep Activity control.
- Turn it off and confirm the choice.
Google says future chats will not appear in Activity and will not be used to train its AI models unless you choose to send feedback. This is a stronger history change than ChatGPT’s training toggle: activity-off chats are not retained in your normal Activity view.
Understand the 72-hour retention period
Google says chats made with Keep Activity off, as well as Temporary Chat conversations, can still be retained for 72 hours. The stated purposes are to provide the service, process feedback and protect Google, users and the public. “Not in Activity” therefore does not mean “immediately erased from every system.”
Know what happens to connected apps and feedback
Connected apps can become unavailable when Keep Activity is off. Disconnecting an app, or deleting data in that app, does not delete copies that were already placed in Gemini Apps Activity. Also, submitting feedback can include recent chat context and uploaded or connected-app content even while Keep Activity is off. Do not send feedback on a sensitive response unless you accept that additional sharing.

Gemini files and Notebooks
Google distinguishes files added as sources to Gemini Notebooks from notebook chats. Google says those source files are not used directly to train generative AI models, while the chats around the notebook follow the Keep Activity rules. Do not generalize that statement to every Gemini upload or every connected service; check where the file was added and which activity setting applied.
Automatic deletion and longer retention
When Gemini Apps Activity is enabled, Google lists an 18-month default auto-delete period. Google also states that data reviewed by service providers can be retained for up to three years after it is disconnected from the account. These periods describe retention practices, not permission to train; deletion, activity and training controls remain separate decisions.
Claude: decline consumer model improvement
Change the privacy choice
- Sign in to the Claude consumer product.
- Open Settings and then the privacy or data-use section.
- Find the choice that allows Anthropic to use chats and coding sessions to improve Claude.
- Turn that choice off and save the setting.
Anthropic’s consumer policy says chats and coding sessions are used to improve Claude when you choose to allow it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when you explicitly opt in through another program. Declining the ordinary model-improvement choice therefore stops the normal opt-in path, but it does not create an absolute no-processing guarantee.

A conversation flagged for trust-and-safety investigation can still be analyzed to improve safety systems. Avoid placing secrets, regulated records or unnecessary personal identifiers in a chat merely because the model-improvement choice is off. If a safety report or abuse investigation is likely, assume the relevant content may be reviewed under the provider’s policy.

Consumer and commercial accounts are different
Anthropic distinguishes consumer products from commercial offerings such as Claude for Work and the API. Commercial terms and administrator controls can provide different defaults and commitments. Confirm the terms attached to your organization’s product instead of copying the consumer setting instructions.
Copilot: disable conversation and voice training
Web, Windows, macOS and mobile
- Sign in to consumer Copilot.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- If you use voice, turn off Training on voice conversations as well.
Microsoft makes these controls available through Copilot on the web, Windows, macOS and mobile, although the exact menu path can differ slightly by platform and release. Check both switches; disabling text-conversation training does not necessarily disable voice-conversation training.
How uploaded files are treated
Microsoft’s privacy information says uploaded files are not used to train Copilot generative models. Conversations about those files remain subject to your training and personalization choices and can be deleted. This is a provider-specific file statement, not a rule that applies to every AI service. If a file contains confidential information, delete the file and the related conversation when the task is complete, and avoid quoting more of it than necessary.
Files need a separate privacy check
An upload can create multiple copies or records: the file itself, extracted text, a conversation transcript, a generated summary, cached data used to answer your question and any feedback you submit. A training switch may cover only one of those uses. Before uploading, ask:

- Is this file needed, or can you provide a short redacted excerpt?
- Does it contain names, account numbers, customer data, source code, health information or trade secrets?
- Which account type am I using—consumer, work, education or API?
- Will disabling activity remove connected-app features I need?
- How will I delete the conversation, attachment and any saved memory afterward?
Gemini’s explicit distinction for Notebook source files and Copilot’s explicit statement about uploaded files show why provider-specific documentation matters. Never infer that an “off” switch in one product gives the same file treatment in another.
A practical privacy workflow before and after a sensitive chat
Before you send anything
- Identify the exact account and product. Consumer, business, enterprise, education and API plans may have different defaults.
- Open the provider’s privacy or data-controls page and disable training choices before starting the conversation.
- Choose a temporary or activity-off mode when you do not need history.
- Redact direct identifiers, credentials, access tokens, client names and unnecessary attachments.
- Check whether memory, personalization, connected apps or voice capture are separately enabled.
While you work
- Do not submit thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written feedback on a sensitive exchange unless you understand what context and files may accompany it.
- Paste only the minimum excerpt needed to solve the problem.
- Do not assume a deleted source file removes text already copied into a chat.
Afterward
- Delete the conversation and attachments if you do not need them.
- Review and remove any saved memory or personalization entry created from the exchange.
- Disconnect integrations only after checking whether disconnection affects future access; it may not erase copies already recorded in activity.
- Revisit the privacy page after an app update, account migration or administrator-policy change.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I deleted the chat, so it could not be used for training.”
Deletion and training opt-out are separate. Delete old material for account cleanup, and turn off the training control to govern eligible future conversations.
“Incognito or private browser mode protects the upload.”
Browser privacy mode mainly affects local browsing data. It does not change the AI provider’s account-level retention or training settings.
“Turning off memory stops all model use.”
Memory controls personalization. They do not necessarily change training, safety review, temporary retention or feedback handling.
“A file is safe because the provider says chats are not trained.”
Verify whether the statement covers uploaded files, extracted text, connected apps and notebook sources. Copilot and Gemini publish specific file distinctions; those distinctions cannot be transferred to ChatGPT or Claude without evidence.
“The switch is off, so nothing is retained.”
Gemini’s 72-hour operational retention and Claude’s safety-review exception are explicit examples of why training opt-out is not equivalent to immediate deletion or zero processing.
Which setting should you choose?

For the most sensitive material, the safest option is often not uploading it to a consumer AI service at all. If you must use AI assistance, combine the appropriate account-level setting with redaction, minimum-necessary disclosure, temporary modes, deletion and a review of your organization’s data policy.
