There is no evidence-based single winner among Edge, Firefox, and Brave. Brave and Firefox document stronger anti-tracking protections enabled by default, while Edge offers three clearly defined tracking-prevention levels and makes compatibility trade-offs explicit. Your best choice depends on the protection you want, the sites you use, and how each browser handles data outside the page’s trackers.
What “private” means in this comparison
Browser privacy has several separate parts. A browser may block third-party trackers, isolate cookies, reduce fingerprinting, limit what the browser maker receives, or simply avoid leaving history on the device after a session. Those protections are not interchangeable. Blocking a tracker does not mean the browser company receives no telemetry, and private browsing does not make you anonymous to websites, networks, employers, or internet providers.
The comparison below uses each company’s own documentation. Microsoft, Mozilla, and Brave describe their products and policies, but those pages are interested sources rather than an independent, same-method test. No controlled benchmark established that one browser blocks a larger percentage of trackers, loads pages faster, or provides the strongest overall privacy on every platform.
Edge, Firefox, and Brave at a glance
| Privacy area | Microsoft Edge | Mozilla Firefox | Brave |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default anti-tracking control | Balanced tracking prevention is Microsoft’s recommended setting. It blocks potentially harmful trackers and trackers from sites you have not visited. | Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) is documented as a built-in defense against cross-site tracking. | Shields is enabled by default and is described by Brave as blocking trackers, cross-site cookies, fingerprinting, and other resources. |
| Stronger option | Strict blocks most trackers across sites, but Microsoft warns that some functions, including video playback or sign-in, may stop working. | Firefox combines ETP with Total Cookie Protection, which isolates cookies by site context. | More aggressive Shields settings provide stronger blocking but have a higher risk of breaking sites. |
| Fingerprinting protection | The Microsoft materials reviewed here focus on tracker prevention; they do not establish an equivalent cross-browser fingerprinting comparison. | Mozilla documents fingerprinting protections as part of Firefox’s privacy and security features. | Brave documents fingerprinting protection, including fingerprint randomization. |
| Per-site controls | Exceptions and a way to inspect blocked trackers are documented. | ETP protections can be adjusted when a site needs an exception; the exact controls can vary by Firefox release. | The Shields control in the address bar lets you change protection for an individual site. |
| Published data-practice statement | Microsoft documents feature-specific data flows and says users can change consent for browsing-activity use in personalization. InPrivate or Guest browsing is excluded from that described personalization use. | The supplied Mozilla pages describe protections, but do not provide a directly comparable telemetry statement for this table. | Brave’s policy, last updated September 23, 2026, says the company does not collect or retain a user’s browsing history; the same policy says some features may process information such as an IP address. |
These are vendor descriptions, not a ranking. Settings, browser version, operating system, account sign-in, extensions, and optional features can all change the data that is processed.

Microsoft Edge: three tracking-prevention levels
Microsoft’s tracking-prevention documentation names three levels: Basic, Balanced, and Strict. The setting controls how Edge handles known or suspected trackers, not every form of data collection on the web.
Basic
Basic blocks potentially harmful trackers while allowing most other trackers. It is the compatibility-oriented choice: more advertising and analytics trackers may load, but fewer pages should need an exception.
Balanced (Microsoft’s recommendation)
Balanced blocks potentially harmful trackers and trackers from sites you have not visited. Microsoft identifies it as the recommended level because it aims to reduce cross-site tracking without routinely breaking normal page functions. It is the sensible starting point if you want Edge’s protection with a lower risk of sign-in, media, or embedded-content failures.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Strict
Strict blocks most trackers across sites. Microsoft warns that some sites may not function as expected, with video playback and sign-in given as examples. Strict is therefore a deliberate trade: less tracker traffic in exchange for more troubleshooting.
Inspecting and fixing a broken site
- Open Edge’s menu (⋯), choose Settings, then open Privacy, search, and services and the Tracking prevention section.
- Start with Balanced unless you have a reason to use Strict. If you choose Strict, test your essential sites immediately.
- When a page fails, use Edge’s site information or tracking-prevention controls to inspect which trackers were blocked. Microsoft documents both a blocked-tracker view and exceptions.
- Add an exception only for the affected site, reload it, and test the specific function that failed. Restore the stricter setting or remove the exception when you no longer need it.
An exception reduces protection for that site. It does not prove that every tracker on the page is safe, so keep exceptions narrow and review them periodically.

What Edge sends to Microsoft
Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation explains that different features can send different data and expose different controls. A separate support page on browsing activity and personalization says users can consent to using browsing activity for personalized Microsoft services and can change that choice. It also says browsing in InPrivate or Guest mode is not used for the described personalization. That statement is limited to that personalization flow; it should not be generalized to every Edge feature, diagnostic process, account service, or network request.
Firefox: Enhanced Tracking Protection and cookie isolation
Mozilla presents Firefox privacy as a combination of defenses rather than a single switch. Its data-protection page describes Enhanced Tracking Protection and Total Cookie Protection as working together against tracking across sites. Mozilla’s privacy and security feature documentation also covers fingerprinting protections and private browsing.
Enhanced Tracking Protection
ETP is Firefox’s documented protection against known tracking techniques, including cross-site tracking. It is designed to operate during ordinary browsing, so you do not have to use a private window to receive the protection. The exact lists and behavior can change as Firefox updates its protections, which is why a current browser release may not behave exactly like an older one.
Total Cookie Protection
Total Cookie Protection isolates cookies by site context. In practical terms, a tracker embedded on several unrelated sites should not be able to use one shared cookie jar to recognize you across all of them. The feature addresses storage-based cross-site tracking; it does not erase every identifier a page can create or prevent a site from recognizing an account you deliberately sign into.
Fingerprinting protections
Mozilla documents fingerprinting defenses as part of Firefox’s privacy features. Fingerprinting attempts to identify a browser from characteristics such as configuration and capabilities instead of relying solely on cookies. Protection can involve limiting or standardizing information exposed to pages, but no browser promise should be read as a guarantee that every fingerprinting technique is defeated.

Adjusting Firefox when a site breaks
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings, then Privacy & Security.
- Review the Enhanced Tracking Protection setting and note whether the page is using the standard or a stricter configuration available in your release.
- If a specific site fails, use Firefox’s site-level protection control to turn protection off for that site only, reload, and test the needed function.
- Turn protection back on or remove the exception after completing the task.
Turning off protection for a site permits the affected tracking and storage behavior. Treat it as a compatibility exception, not as a privacy improvement.
Private browsing is not anonymity
Firefox private windows primarily limit local session records such as ordinary browsing history after the window closes. They do not hide activity from the websites you visit, your employer’s network, your school, your internet provider, or a network operator. Private browsing is therefore a local-history feature that can be used alongside tracking protection, not a substitute for it.
Brave: default Shields with per-site control
Brave’s privacy-features page and Shields documentation say Shields is on by default. Brave describes Shields as blocking trackers, cross-site cookies, fingerprinting, and other resources. It also describes filter lists, storage partitioning, and fingerprint randomization as parts of its approach.
What Shields changes
Blocking cross-site cookies and partitioning storage reduce the ability of an embedded service to carry one identifier between unrelated sites. Fingerprint randomization aims to make a browser harder to recognize from its technical characteristics. These are Brave’s product descriptions; the supplied evidence does not independently measure how they compare with Firefox or Edge under identical conditions.
Changing Shields for one site
- Open the site in Brave and select the Shields icon in the address bar.
- Review the protection summary and the available controls for trackers, scripts, cookies, or fingerprinting.
- Lower protection only as much as necessary for the broken feature, then reload the page.
- Restore the stronger setting when finished. Brave warns that aggressive settings have a greater chance of breaking sites.
Because the control is per site, you can preserve stronger defaults elsewhere instead of disabling protection globally.

Brave’s published browsing-history statement
Brave’s Browser Privacy Policy, marked “LAST UPDATED September 23, 2026,” states: “Our company does not collect or retain a user’s browsing history.” The same policy qualifies that some features require processing information such as an IP address. The accurate reading is that Brave makes this specific browsing-history commitment; it is not a claim that no information is ever processed for any feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the three approaches differ
Default blocking
Brave starts with Shields enabled, and Mozilla documents ETP as a built-in Firefox defense. Edge starts with a named level whose behavior depends on the selected setting; Balanced is Microsoft’s recommendation, while Strict is the stronger but less compatible option. If you want a low-effort default, Brave or Firefox may require fewer initial decisions. Edge gives you an explicit three-level choice from the start.
Cookies and storage
Firefox describes Total Cookie Protection as isolating cookies by site context. Brave describes both cross-site-cookie blocking and storage partitioning. Edge’s cited materials describe tracker-list-based prevention levels and controls, but they do not establish an equivalent, directly comparable cookie-partitioning claim. That difference is a documentation distinction, not proof that Edge cannot provide other storage protections.
Fingerprinting
Brave and Firefox explicitly document fingerprinting defenses in the materials reviewed. The Microsoft materials reviewed for this comparison concentrate on tracking prevention and do not establish an equivalent Edge-versus-Firefox-versus-Brave fingerprinting result. Do not convert that documentation gap into a claim that Edge has no fingerprinting mitigation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompatibility and control
All three browsers can encounter sites that depend on cross-site cookies, scripts, embedded sign-in widgets, or other resources that privacy controls restrict. Edge explicitly warns about Strict-mode breakage. Brave says stronger Shields settings increase breakage risk. Firefox provides site-level protection controls. The practical difference is how clearly each browser exposes the trade-off and how quickly you can create a narrow exception.

Which browser should you choose?
Choose Edge when you want adjustable enforcement
Edge fits readers who value a clearly labeled spectrum from Basic to Strict, want Microsoft’s recommended Balanced mode, or need a straightforward blocked-tracker view and exception system. Use Balanced for everyday compatibility; reserve Strict for profiles or sites where you accept troubleshooting.
Choose Firefox when cookie isolation matters
Firefox is a strong fit if you want documented cross-site defenses built around ETP and Total Cookie Protection, plus stated fingerprinting protections. It is also suitable when you understand that private windows protect local history rather than providing anonymity.
Choose Brave when you want strong defaults with a visible switch
Brave suits readers who want Shields enabled without first configuring a protection level and who prefer a prominent per-site control. Its documented protections cover trackers, cross-site cookies, fingerprinting, partitioning, and randomization, while its policy makes a specific browsing-history commitment. Aggressive settings may require occasional exceptions.
When none is automatically “the most private”
If your decision depends on vendor telemetry, account services, mobile-versus-desktop behavior, or a particular extension, the available official descriptions are not enough to produce a universal ranking. Compare the settings you will actually use, read the privacy controls for optional features, and test essential sites on the operating system and release you run.
A practical setup and review checklist
- Install the current release offered for your operating system and keep automatic updates enabled where appropriate.
- Record your starting protection setting: Edge Balanced, Firefox’s standard ETP configuration, or Brave’s default Shields.
- Test the sites you rely on for sign-in, video, payments, document editing, and embedded support tools.
- When something fails, create a per-site exception instead of weakening protection everywhere.
- Review extensions and optional browser features separately; a private browser cannot make an extension trustworthy by default.
- Recheck privacy settings after major updates because filter lists, controls, and feature defaults can change.
- Remember that an account login, a site’s own first-party records, and network-level observation are outside the narrow scope of tracker blocking.
Evidence limits you should keep in mind
The cited pages establish what Microsoft, Mozilla, and Brave say their products do and what selected policies say about data handling. They do not provide a common test harness, a directly comparable statistic, exact current build numbers, or guaranteed feature parity across desktop and mobile. Browser behavior can also vary with region, operating system, account state, extensions, and enabled services.
For that reason, treat the comparison as a decision guide rather than a laboratory verdict. A browser’s default setting is important, but so are the exceptions you create, the features you enable, and the parties that can observe traffic outside the browser.
