After a Xiaomi phone installs a HyperOS or MIUI update, verify the software build, audit sensitive app permissions, review ad-personalization controls, confirm Xiaomi Account security, and make sure Find device and private-space protections are still configured. Menu names can move between phone models, regions, carrier builds, and software versions, so use the labels on your own device rather than assuming an update preserved every setting.
1. Record the installed build before changing anything
A version number and security-patch date give you a reference point if an app suddenly requests a permission again, a menu has moved, or a privacy control appears to behave differently. Without that information, it is difficult to tell whether a setting changed because of the update, an app restore, a carrier customization, or a later application update.
- Open Settings > About phone/tablet.
- Tap the Xiaomi HyperOS icon. On older devices, the equivalent entry may identify MIUI.
- Record the displayed HyperOS or MIUI version and the Android security-patch date.
- Open the three-dot menu on that screen and inspect the additional update settings. Note whether automatic downloading, automatic installation, or notifications are enabled according to your preference.
The exact wording and available switches are not identical on every Xiaomi model. A security-patch date is not the same thing as an application update date, and it does not prove that every Xiaomi or third-party app is current. Keep the build information with any troubleshooting notes so support staff can identify the software branch you are using.

2. Audit app permissions one application at a time
Updates can restore, revoke, or reclassify permissions when an app is reinstalled, migrated, or updated for a newer Android target. Xiaomi provides both a central permissions view and an app-specific route:

- For a central audit, open Settings > Apps > Permissions.
- For a single app, open its information page and choose Permission management.
Inspect at least location, camera, microphone, contacts, phone, SMS, photos or files, and notification access. Do not assume that a permission shown as “allowed” is necessary merely because the app has used it before. Match each allowance to a feature you actually use.
Location
Location access can reveal where a phone is being used, not just where an app is open. Xiaomi documents a per-app route at Settings > Apps > Permissions > Permissions > Location. Choose While using the app when navigation, weather, ride-hailing, or another foreground feature needs location. Choose Only this time when the option is offered and you need a one-off result. Reserve an always-allowed setting for an app whose background function is essential and understandable, such as a trusted safety or automation feature.
After an update, check apps that were newly restored, duplicated in a work profile, or updated while you were away. A location permission can be technically functional while still being broader than your intended use. If you deny it, the app may lose map centering, geofencing, nearby-device discovery, or location-tagging features; you can restore the permission later without resetting the phone.
Camera and microphone
Camera and microphone permissions expose sensors that can capture more sensitive information than ordinary account data. Permit them only for a feature that needs them, such as video calls, scanning, recording, or image capture. Use a foreground or one-time option where available instead of a permanent allowance. If you deny camera access, scanning and in-app photography stop working; denying microphone access affects calls, voice messages, dictation, and voice search. These changes are reversible from the same permission-management screen.
Contacts, phone, and SMS
Contacts access can disclose an entire address book, while phone and SMS permissions can expose call metadata, messages, or one-time codes. A caller-ID, dialer, messaging, or backup feature may need one of these permissions, but a game, flashlight, wallpaper tool, or simple reader generally should not. If an app’s core feature still works without the permission, leave it denied and grant access only when a specific function requires it.
Photos and files
Review whether an app can access selected media, all photos, or broad file storage. A photo editor may need the image you choose without needing an unrestricted library. A document app may need a particular folder rather than every file. Restricting access can prevent gallery import, attachment selection, offline maps, or document export; the recovery path is to reopen Permission management and broaden access only for the task at hand.

Notifications and special access
Notification access is separate from ordinary notification permission and can allow an app to read notifications generated by other apps. It is commonly used by companion devices, automation tools, and notification-management utilities. Re-enable it only when you understand why the app needs to see other notifications. If you turn it off, a watch, automation rule, or notification mirror may stop updating, but the setting can be restored without reinstalling the app.

When two settings appear plausible, compare them using the same five questions: does the control affect one app or the whole device, how long does the allowance last, what function will be lost if it is denied, what data is exposed, and can you recover by changing the setting again?

This framework helps distinguish a privacy decision from a compatibility fix. If only one app fails, change that app’s permission rather than enabling a device-wide control for everything.
4. Turn off personalized ad recommendations if you do not want them
Ad personalization is controlled separately from most app permissions. On HyperOS, Xiaomi documents this path: Settings > Privacy & Security > Security > Additional settings > Ad services > Personalized ad recommendations. Turn the recommendation control off if you do not want Xiaomi’s services to use the associated personalization setting.
Some software versions place related controls under Passwords & security instead. If the documented path is absent, use Settings search for ad services, personalized ad recommendations, or advertising, then verify that you are changing the recommendation control rather than a general notification switch.
Disabling personalized recommendations does not mean every advertisement disappears. It changes personalization, while advertising or promotional content may still appear in a service that displays it. Xiaomi’s privacy disclosures describe categories such as app usage, identifiers, network information, location, and system-setting data; the available controls vary by service and region. Treat the ad setting as one data-use choice, not as a universal privacy-off switch.

5. Secure the Xiaomi Account and recovery details
Your Xiaomi Account connects account security, device management, Xiaomi Cloud features, and Find device. Open Settings > Xiaomi Account and verify:
- The signed-in account is yours and uses the expected email address or phone number.
- Recovery details are current and reachable without relying on the phone that might be lost.
- The device list contains the handset you are holding and does not contain an unfamiliar device.
- Any available sign-in, verification, or security prompts reflect your current security choices.
Xiaomi also says account security information, permissions, and device management can be reviewed at account.xiaomi.com. Check that account from a trusted browser and sign out or remove devices you no longer own. Do not share verification codes with anyone who asks by message or phone; an update does not require another person to receive your code.
If you changed the account password during troubleshooting, allow the phone and cloud services to complete sign-in again before assuming synchronization is broken. A password change can interrupt cloud access until the new credentials are entered, but it does not require a factory reset.
6. Confirm that Find device is still enabled
Find device depends on the Xiaomi Account and Xiaomi Cloud. Open Settings > Xiaomi Account > Xiaomi Cloud > Find device and verify that the feature is enabled for this handset. Review the account shown on the screen and make sure you can authenticate to it.
Xiaomi describes Find device as able to locate a phone, mark it as lost or lock it, and erase data remotely. Those actions are intended for a lost or stolen device; do not initiate a lock or erase operation merely to test the menu. A safe post-update check is limited to confirming the enabled state, the account association, and your ability to access the account through its normal recovery method.
Find device is not a substitute for a screen lock or encrypted backups. A screen lock protects local access, while Find device provides a cloud-linked response when the handset is missing. If you remove the Xiaomi Account, disable Xiaomi Cloud, or lose access to recovery details, the remote-management path can be affected even if the phone itself still works normally.

7. Recheck privacy protection and private spaces
If you use Xiaomi’s privacy-protection features, revisit them after the update rather than assuming their old password and notification behavior carried over unchanged. MIUI materials place the privacy-protection password under Passwords & security > Privacy protection password. Confirm the password method you expect and make sure you can unlock the protected area.

Review any private spaces holding photos, files, or notes. Then inspect whether notifications from private messages are shown on the lock screen or in the notification shade. Showing message content can expose sensitive information to anyone who sees the display; hiding it can make a message appear less actionable until you unlock the private area.
Keep a recovery method that does not depend on remembering an obsolete password. If the update changed the label or moved the entry, use Settings search for privacy protection, private space, or hidden. Do not delete a private space to solve a navigation problem; deletion can remove its local content.
8. Leave core Security app protections enabled
Xiaomi describes Security Center, commonly presented through the Security app, as a critical system application. Some security checks and defenses depend on it. Avoid disabling core security functions merely to simplify the interface or stop a recurring recommendation.
Inspect a warning before acting on it. Determine whether it concerns an optional cleanup suggestion, an application permission, a system component, or a protection mechanism. If a security feature is consuming unusual battery or displaying an error after the update, first install any available system or Security app update, restart the phone, and record the exact message. Disabling a core defense can remove the symptom while reducing protection against unwanted software or unsafe configuration.

9. Diagnose a privacy setting that appears to have changed
The menu is missing or has moved
Start with the build recorded under About phone/tablet. Search Settings using the feature name, then check whether your model uses Passwords & security where another model uses Privacy & Security. Region, carrier software, and the installed HyperOS or MIUI branch can change labels and availability. Do not infer that a missing menu means a protection was disabled.

An app suddenly asks for permission again
Open the app’s information page, choose Permission management, and inspect the specific permission rather than granting everything at once. If the app was restored or updated, verify that you are editing the correct copy of the app, including any work-profile or cloned instance. Grant the narrowest duration that supports the feature, then test that feature in the foreground.
A feature stopped working after you denied access
Identify the failed function before changing settings. Camera denial affects scanning or in-app photography; microphone denial affects calls or dictation; location denial affects mapping or geofencing; contacts, phone, or SMS denial affects address-book, calling, or message-related functions; file restrictions affect import and export. Restore only the relevant permission, preferably with a while-using or one-time option, and remove it again when the task is complete.
Personalized ads still appear
Confirm that Personalized ad recommendations is off, then distinguish personalization from the presence of advertising itself. The control does not promise an ad-free interface, and individual Xiaomi services can have their own promotional or data-use settings. Review the service’s privacy choices separately when available.

Check the Xiaomi Account identity, recovery details, network connection, and Xiaomi Cloud sign-in. Do not erase the phone or remove the account while troubleshooting unless you have confirmed backups and understand the consequences. If the device belongs to an employer or another owner, their management policy may limit what you can change.
10. A practical order for the post-update review
Review settings in an order that protects your ability to recover from mistakes:
- Record the HyperOS or MIUI version and security-patch date.
- Confirm the Xiaomi Account and recovery details before changing cloud-linked controls.
- Verify Find device while the account is available.
- Audit high-impact app permissions, starting with location, camera, microphone, contacts, phone, SMS, files, and notification access.
- Adjust personalized ad recommendations separately from app permissions.
- Check privacy-protection passwords, private spaces, and private-message notification visibility if you use them.
- Review Security app warnings without disabling core defenses.
- Reopen the affected app or feature and confirm that the narrow change solved the problem.
This order keeps account and recovery information available before you alter permissions or cloud features. It also separates device-wide decisions from single-app fixes, reducing the chance that one malfunction leads to unnecessarily broad access.
What the update can and cannot tell you
A successful installation does not prove that every privacy setting is unchanged. Xiaomi’s general HyperOS and MIUI documentation does not provide a model-specific change log for every handset, region, and carrier build. The reliable final authority is the configuration displayed on your phone: the installed build, each app’s current permission state, the ad-recommendation control, the Xiaomi Account association, Find device, and any private-space protections you actually use.
At the same time, a changed menu is not evidence that data was exposed. Check the setting, identify its scope and duration, and choose the smallest allowance that preserves the feature you need. Most of these choices can be changed again without reinstalling apps or resetting the phone.
